Books & Pens Tutorial and Learning Center

Books & Pens Tutorial and Learning Center Founded by Maria Carmen Francisco, Books and Pens was built on a genuine love for children and a passion for meaningful, high-quality education.

Since opening its doors in January 2014, Books and Pens Tutorial and Learning Center has been a trusted partner in nurturing young minds in Better Living, Parañaque. What began as a small learning space for a handful of preschoolers has grown into a well-established educational center offering (1) Pre-Kinder education and Play and Learn Program for 3 and 4-year old children and (2) Tutoring Progr

ams to students from kindergarten and the early grades to high school and even college level. With a dedicated team of licensed teachers and expert tutors, the center quickly earned the trust of families in the community by providing personalized and results-driven learning experiences. Growth came with challenges, including an early relocation, but these only strengthened the center’s commitment to excellence. Today, Books and Pens stands out for its forward-thinking approach to education. Its preschool program has evolved into a dynamic, play-based learning experience inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach, fostering not just academic readiness, but creativity, a lifelong love for learning, strong social-emotional skills, and the confidence to think independently. The center also takes pride in continuously enhancing its academic programs. Its Reading instruction in the preschool level and in its tutoring programs is grounded in the Science of Reading, utilizing the Orton-Gillingham approach; while its Math program combines the proven effectiveness of Singapore Math and Montessori principles—ensuring that students develop strong foundational skills and critical thinking abilities. Books and Pens continues to grow, innovate, and raise the bar in educational excellence. Guided by its core values of Excellence, Commitment, and Compassion, the center remains dedicated to empowering every learner to reach their fullest potential. For the Learning Center

We are worrying about the wrong thing when it comes to “kindergarten readiness.”

Many adults are concerned with whether a child can read, write, and meet "academic expectations" by the time kindergarten begins. Those questions feel responsible. They are also incomplete.

The more important question is this: Am I willing to compromise my child’s ability to regulate, attend, and remain emotionally available for learning in exchange for early academic exposure that research shows does not improve (and can undermine) long-term outcomes?

Kindergarten has shifted from a developmental bridge to an academically intensified environment. Increased sitting, constant direction-following, early benchmarks, and reduced play are now treated as normal. Developmentally, they are not.

Self-regulation, attention, working memory, and cognitive flexibility are still wiring in early childhood. These systems develop through movement, play, autonomy, and co-regulation—not through pressure or performance demands.

When academics are pushed before these systems are ready, stress increases, regulation stays external, and learning becomes fragile. Any early gains fade, while the long-term costs show up as disengagement, weaker executive functioning, and poorer academic persistence.

This is why research on delayed kindergarten entry consistently finds stronger self-regulation, attention, and emotional readiness for learning. Not because children missed academics, but because their brains were given time to build the foundation learning depends on.

Cardboard boxes to us, a playground of endless possibilities to them. 📦

We provided the materials, and our learners transformed ordinary cardboard into extraordinary ideas through imagination, collaboration, and problem-solving.

Watching our little builders bring their ideas to life and hearing the stories behind each creation is always a joy. Every child is creative, capable, and full of endless potential. 🌈

🍎 We warmly invite you to our Symposium on Early Nutrition in the Preschool Years.

Proper nutrition plays a vital role in a child's growth, learning, and overall well-being. Join us for an informative symposium designed to help parents, guardians, and educators better understand the nutritional needs of preschoolers and discover practical ways to encourage healthy eating habits.

Our resource speaker, Ms. Mary Dancille D. Villarey, RND, Nutrition Officer of the Parañaque City Health Office, will discuss healthy food choices for young children, foods to limit, common feeding challenges, and practical strategies for raising healthy eaters. A question-and-answer session will follow the talk.

This symposium is free of charge and is open to Books & Pens parents and guardians, as well as the general public. Please take a moment to complete our short RSVP form so we can prepare accordingly.
