💙 Some of our SECAns take the long way, and theirs are the stories that stay with us. Meet Kyle, SECA Batch 2013 to 2014. Here is his story, in his own words.
I was the kid the principal knew by name, and not for the right reasons. In grade school, I was not the achiever. I got into trouble, a lot. Fights, the principal's office, the works.
But SECA never wrote that kid off. And in our chapel, among the instruments for worship, there was a guitar I could never keep my hands off. I taught myself fingerstyle, chasing the songs everyone said were too hard, like Sungha Jung's arrangement of River Flows in You, just to prove that I could play them.
That little guitar taught me the only pattern I have ever needed. Find the hardest thing. Learn it until I can play it. Then show people I can.
I will be honest with you. I did not change overnight, and not while I was still at SECA. The reflection came later, after I had left, when I was finally ready. But the ground was already laid here. SECA was the place that could hold a difficult child without ever giving up on him.
So I ran that same play on everything else. From the bottom of the class to the top of it. Then Magna Cum Laude. Then a corporate leadership program that selected only 23 of more than 2,500 applicants. Then the Nestlé Cultivate YOUth Mentorship Program, 1 of 140 chosen from more than 8,000 across Asia, Oceania, and Africa. Same kid. Same pattern.
So if your child is not the star of the class yet, I hope my story means something to you. SECA can hold that kid too. It started with a guitar in a chapel, and by God's grace, it became a whole life.
