So I promised myself that 2014 will be the year that I explore new music. I have to say, that the journey so far has been enlightening but some what bizarre in a good way. I've learned that the music of the past(bands that I shelved and never bothered researching about) can still surprise my ears like the music of today(minus the pop stuff). Some of the genres I ran in to.. rather.. revisited, gave me a new outlook/reaction after being in the music scene for quite some time. And Voila! here is what I dug up under the old couch.
JOURNEY TO THE GREAT BEYOND
PART 1: My Heart in Slow Motion...literally
So, here is one of the bands I ran in too when i was sun bathing in Doom Metal paradise, drum roll*, SOLITUDE AETURNUS!!. I pumped my speakers up, EQ in check, more bass for taste, and gave it a go! ....3 minutes in to the song.... thought about 3 things: First. I wondered how it felt to bungee jump off a cliff in slow motion, staring straight down, with a noose tied to my neck.. 2nd, a flash back of me euthanizing a kitten.. and lastly, despair...
ok, so not what i expected initially. I'm more used to melodic, speedy type of metal music like Thrash or Power Metal. S**t that would make you feel like Leonidas cornered in the hot gates. You could just imagine where all that agro and agression went when I started playing the song. To break it down, Doom metal is known for really slow tempos and heavy/thick riffs. Tuning goes to the down low, and the lyrics is all about ..well.. Doom. Literally, my heart started moving in a slow pace while tuned in. Ex*****on or arrangement of the songs usually starts with an eerie guitar plucking or strumming(0:00 - 0:43) and then suddenly hits you with the lightning and thunder. BOOM! D Phrygian up your ass at 1:01. Really frightening stuff for my virgin ears.. and I thought Mastodon was the final frontier LOL but hey, i just got here. I have yet to see the sights and sounds of Doom metal. Solitude Aeturnus in my opinion is a good place to start if you want to have a taste of some Doom cuisine. To add some choices to your itinerary try some of these choices too: Cathedral , The Sword, Trouble, My Dying Bride, Type'O Negative..
Note: I'm new to this stuff and this post is based on my own analysis. Give me your suggestions and opinions if you know a thing or two :). So no "smart-ass fanboy" insults ayt?
