We’re so grateful to the parents who chose to come this morning, even with the rain. Thank you po for showing up for a conversation that matters.

With everything happening around us, we feel more strongly than ever the need to be proactive in raising responsible digital users.

Dr. Paula David reminded us that children don't automatically become responsible with technology dahil lang tumatanda sila. Screens deserve guidance as much as food, bedtime, school, and physical safety. We have to teach them, model it for them, and ask ourselves hard questions, too.

• Can we put our phones down for our children?
• Are we modeling the digital habits we want them to have?

Thank you to all the parents who participated and reflected with us today, and to Dr. Paula for helping us take a step back and look at childhood through a wider lens.

May we give our children not only a strong start in academics, but also a childhood worth remembering.🫶🏼

Before the pandemic, our waiting area was filled with children playing and making friends with fellow Kumon students from other schools while waiting for the bell.

Then the pandemic came, and we noticed more screens filling those waiting moments.

That observation became the starting point for the first of our Kumon Family Talks:

PROTECTING CHILDHOOD IN A DIGITAL WORLD

Today’s talk with Dr. Paula David reminded us that childhood isn’t just about raising academically capable children.

Childhood is for play. Friendship. Movement and exploration. Learning to manage big feelings. Boredom that leads to imagination.

We also reflected on what screens are replacing, and how we can help children develop the skills to become responsible digital users who know when to stop.

Childhood is short, so we protect it with all our might.💪🏼

Not by keeping kids away from technology, but by making sure technology doesn’t take childhood away from them.🩵

When Maxine first came to Kumon Paniqui, she was still a Prep student.

Just 𝟱 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵𝘀 after enrolling, she was already doing 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝟮 material (3-digit vertical addition and subtraction without writing carries and borrows). 𝗕𝘆 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝟱, 𝘀𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗱𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝟭𝟬 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗵.

Her aunt shares that Kumon helped Maxine become disciplined in her studies and confident in Math. That confidence followed her even beyond the classroom, taking her to Math competitions in the province.

But when we think of Maxine’s 8 years with us, it's not the levels she reached or competitions she joined that we remember most.

We remember Japan.

She left for what was supposed to be a two-month summer vacation, carrying two months’ worth of Kumon worksheets with her.

Then the 𝗖𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗱 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗱. 𝟮 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗝𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝟮 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀.

Kumon Connect had not yet been introduced, so month after month, we sent her paper worksheets by courier. She answered them in Japan and sent photos of her completed work through Messenger.

𝘐𝘵 𝘸𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘱. The situation was uncertain and the arrangements were difficult.

But her family kept choosing to continue with us. 𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗼 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝗠𝗮𝘅𝗶𝗻𝗲.

“The setbacks I faced as a student made me want to quit so many times, yet it never failed to put me in a place where I could view how far I was," she shares.

Perhaps that is what these 8 years have given her – not just stronger Math skills, but the chance to look back and see that she kept going.

Our little Prep student is now looking ahead to college, with her heart set on becoming a doctor.

We've moved homes and changed our name a few times as our Center grew alongside our students.

But one thing has stayed the same: Kumon came to Paniqui in 2013, when our journey began on Magallanes Street. And since then, we've been changing generations, one child at a time.

This cute uniform you've been seeing us wear is our commemorative staff shirt as we count down to our 13th anniversary this September. The "Magallanes 2013" on the back is a reminder of all the children, families, and teachers who have been part of our journey through the years.

13 years later, we're still growing, still learning from our mistakes, and always looking forward with anticipation to what's ahead.💙🏠
