The Joaquin Bernas Student Corps recently held a forum on February 27, 2026, at Justitia Hall of the Ateneo de Manila University School of Law titled “EDSA Lives: A Continuing Struggle for Democracy.”
In the forum, Mr. Cleve Arguelles presented his research “Revisiting Authoritarian Nostalgia in Marcos Jr.’s Philippines,” examining how the current administration is often compared with the rule of his father, Ferdinand Marcos Sr., whose regime was marked by dictatorship and repression. Human rights lawyer and legislator Chel Diokno then reflected on “A Look Back at Martial Law from the Lens of a Human Rights Lawyer,” emphasizing how the declaration of Martial Law in the Philippines dismantled democratic institutions and civil liberties while also giving rise to courageous legal defense movements such as the Free Legal Assistance Group (FLAG) that fought state oppression. Finally, political analyst Prof. Richard Heydarian reminded the audience that democracy must extend beyond elections by strengthening civil society, the rule of law, and democratic institutions.
More than a commemoration of the People Power Revolution, it serves as a powerful reminder to law students that the rule of law is not merely a concept studied in textbooks, but a living safeguard that protects democratic institutions and individual freedoms. EDSA remains as a beacon of hope, and a reminder that truth and justice will prevail.

The Joaquin Bernas Student Corps joins the Ateneo Law School community in this time of deep bereavement.
We mourn the passing of Dean Joey Hofileña, a leader who carried both strength and kindness in equal measure. He led not only with authority, but with a heart that inspired trust and respect among students and colleagues alike. The values he lived by will continue to guide the community and his passion for the law school will remain.
We honor his life, his service, and the example he leaves behind. May his legacy continue to inspire those who follow the path he helped illuminate.

In celebration of the 40th anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution, the Joaquin Bernas Center Student Corps is hosting an event themed: “EDSA Lives: A Continuing Struggle for Democracy” on February 27, 2026, from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM at the Ateneo de Manila University School of Law. This commemorative talk seeks to honor the revolution's legacy and reflect on how its spirit continues to shape our democratic institutions and inspire the vital role citizens play in safeguarding freedom and the rule of law.
The event will be joined by a panel of highly distinguished and renowned speakers: Atty. Chel Diokno, Richard Heydarian, and Prof. Cleve Arguelles. As prominent voices in political analysis, law, and democracy, they will share their expertise and first-hand insights to explore how the lessons of EDSA remain profoundly relevant today amid our evolving political landscape.
It is a meaningful opportunity for students, faculty, and advocates to engage with the enduring impact of the revolution and reflect on the continuing significance of democracy as we prepare to lead the next generation.
