The Bachelor of Science in Disaster Resiliency and Management (BS DRM) program of Davao del Norte State College bolstered disaster preparedness through its flagship activity, KALASAG 2026, on April 30, 2026, at the Davao del Norte State College Gymnasium and Sports Complex.
The event gathered BS DRM students for a series of discussions and demonstrations focused on disaster preparedness, emergency response, and resiliency training.
In an interview, DREAMSS adviser Kim Harvey C. Roca explained how KALASAG serves as a platform for students to strengthen teamwork, adaptability, and cooperation while understanding the importance of collective action in building resilient communities.
"This activity is rooted in the understanding that achieving resilience requires more than individual effort. It calls for unity, strong teamwork, and a proactive mindset," he stated.
Meanwhile, first-year BS DRM student Zyra Mae E. Dalisay shared her key experience of the activity as she encountered physically demanding drills in fire equipment handling, including rolling a fire hose and learning how to properly extinguish a fire.
"KALASAG forces us to work together. From practicing yells to fighting simulated fires, you have to communicate clearly. It builds leadership because you learn to trust your teammates and take charge," Dalisay said.
Despite the challenges, she said she was able to overcome them by applying knowledge from her previous medical training and carefully following the techniques demonstrated by the instructors.
