The nation honors National Artist Lamberto Avellana on his 111th Birth Anniversary.

Lamberto V. Avellana, a distinguished director in both theater and cinema, was dubbed "The Boy Wonder of Philippine Movies" as early as 1939. He was a trailblazer in employing the motion picture camera to craft a point-of-view perspective, a revolutionary method that reshaped film storytelling techniques. At just 20 years old, he took on the role of Joan of Arc during Ateneo’s diamond jubilee, highlighting his early ambitions to cultivate a Filipino theater.

In partnership with Daisy Hontiveros, an actress in various UP productions and his future wife, he founded the Barangay Theater Guild, which featured prominent figures like Leon Ma. Guerrero and Raul Manglapus. It was after observing their performances that Carlos P. Romulo, then president of Philippine Films, urged Avellana to delve into film directing. His inaugural film, Sakay, presented a unique visual rhythm that played a significant role in the advancement of cinematic language.
