Campus journalists, publication advisers, and student leaders gathered at CJ Talks Season 4 on July 11 for a whole-day journalism program focused on ethical reporting, conflict-sensitive journalism, and collaboration among campus publications. The event served as a platform for aspiring journalists to enhance their skills while reaffirming their commitment to truthful, responsible, and socially responsive reporting. It also provided an opportunity for different campus publications to learn from one another through meaningful discussions and shared experiences.

The program began with registration, preliminary ceremonies, and the acknowledgment of participating publications before the members of Collegium formally welcomed the attendees. Dr. Clarice Cabrera, Collegium adviser, delivered her opening remarks on behalf of Dr. Evelyn Saludes, setting an inspiring and welcoming tone for the event.

The learning sessions opened with the rationale of the activity presented by Mc Donie Pulido, Managing Editor of Collegium, followed by the Journalistโ€™s Creed led by Nathazsa Ashley Papas, Associate Editor of Collegium. Althea Micah Nueva, Features and Literary Editor of Collegium, introduced the resource speaker before the morning lecture officially began. The discussion highlighted the importance of responsible journalism, ethical reporting, and the role of campus media in addressing community concerns.

The afternoon session resumed with an intermission number before Jella Kudera, Editor-in-Chief of Collegium, delivered her message to the participants. A moderated discussion allowed attendees to exchange insights with the speakers, followed by the sharing of best practices from different campus publications. The activity fostered collaboration and encouraged student journalists to embrace innovative and effective newsroom practices.

The program concluded with the Journalistโ€™s Pledge led by Karl Kirvy Enojas, Layout Editor of Collegium, followed by a photo opportunity that captured the participantsโ€™ shared commitment to journalism. Nathazsa Ashley Papas delivered the closing remarks, reminding everyone of the responsibility that comes with every published story. Participants left the venue carrying not only new knowledge but also a renewed dedication to truth, accountability, and public service.

๐’๐ข๐ฅ๐ž๐ง๐ญ ๐‚๐ซ๐ข๐ฌ๐ข๐ฌ

A school is meant to be a sanctuary where children discover their potential, build friendships, and prepare for their future.

In Tacloban City, that sense of safety was shattered by a tragic incident that claimed the lives of three young students. What should have been an ordinary school day turned into a heartbreaking event that left families grieving, classmates traumatized, and an entire nation searching for answers.

Now, three empty chairs serve as agonizing reminders of lives lost too soon. Now, three families have to deal with dreams that will never come true, graduations that will never be witnessed, and birthdays that will never be celebrated. There are no words to describe the suffering of parents who sent their kids to school with the hope that they would return home safely.

This heartbreaking incident is more than an isolated act. It is a wake-up call that serious problems among young people often begin long before a tragedy occurs. It begins with problems that go unnoticed, emotions left unaddressed, and warning signs that are too often ignored. Every cry for help that goes unheard increases the risk of another tragedy.

How many students continue to suffer in silence because they fear being judged? How many cases of bullying are dismissed as part of growing up? How many children struggle with emotional pain while believing no one is willing to listen? These questions demand honest reflection because every child deserves to feel safe, valued, and protected.

Responsibility does not belong to one person alone. Parents must nurture compassion and discipline at home. Schools must strengthen programs that promote mental health, conflict resolution, and bullying prevention. Communities need to foster an atmosphere where kids are taught empathy rather than hatred. Collective action, not personal blame, is necessary to protect young lives.

Every child lost is more than another statistic. Each one represents a future doctor, teacher, engineer, artist, or leader whose potential was stolen in an instant. When violence enters a classroom, it destroys not only lives but also hope, trust, and the very purpose of education.

No parent deserves to bury a child because another child chose violence. If this tragedy teaches us anything, it is that silence can be just as dangerous as violence itself. We must listen sooner, care deeper, and act before another family experiences the same unimaginable loss. The greatest tribute to the victims is not only remembering them, but ensuring that every school remains a place where children learn, dream, and return home safely.

๐”๐Œ ๐๐€๐๐€๐๐Ž ๐‚๐Ž๐‹๐‹๐„๐†๐„ โ€“ Seventy-five years of excellence, resilience, and service took center stage as the University of Mindanao Panabo College celebrated its 75th Founding Anniversary on June 30, 2026, at the UM Panabo Gym. Carrying the theme, โ€œ75 Years of Transformative Education: Honoring the Past, Empowering the Future,โ€ the milestone celebration became more than a commemorative event. It was a sincere homage to generations of educators, students, alumni, and partners who have shaped the institutionโ€™s enduring legacy.

The celebration unfolded through three meaningful chapters: the Formal Program, the Dinner and Fellowship, and the vibrant Celebration Night. Each strengthened ties throughout the university's community while reflecting its dedication to academic success.

The afternoon began with registration and fellowship before guests gathered for the formal opening ceremony. The atmosphere turned solemn as the invocation, the Philippine National Anthem, and the University Hymn echoed throughout the venue, reminding everyone of the institutionโ€™s values and shared identity. The event began with a heartfelt welcome from Dr. Celso L. Tagadiad, who also set the tone for an inspiring and thankful evening.

One of the programโ€™s defining moments was the audio-visual presentation titled โ€œ75 Years of Transformative Education: Honoring the Past, Empowering the Future.โ€ Through photographs, milestones, and stories, the presentation retraced UM Panaboโ€™s remarkable journeyโ€”from its humble beginnings to becoming an institution that continues to mold competent professionals and responsible citizens. It served as a reminder that behind every achievement lie decades of perseverance, innovation, and unwavering dedication to quality education.

Recognition remained at the heart of the celebration as distinguished awardees, valued partners, sponsors, and stakeholders were honored for their invaluable contributions to the universityโ€™s growth. Their acknowledgment highlighted a crucial reality: an educational institution's achievement is not built by an individual alone, but rather, it is always the product of a community's collective efforts and combined dedication.

The event also featured inspiring messages from respected university leaders and alumni representatives, who encouraged the audience to preserve the institutionโ€™s rich heritage while embracing new opportunities in an ever-changing world. Their words resonated deeply, emphasizing that education continues to evolve, but its mission of transforming lives remains constant.

Following the formal ceremonies, guests shared moments of camaraderie during the dinner and fellowship, where conversations extended beyond classrooms and offices. Former classmates reunited, colleagues reflected on shared memories, and new friendships were formed. These moments illustrated that education creates lifelong connections beyond academic achievements.

As night fell, the atmosphere transformed into an exhilarating celebration. With upbeat performances, a dance showdown, raffle draws, and an exciting social night, the gym came to life. In addition to showcasing the abilities of the UM Panabo community, the entertainment showcased the vibrant spirit that has characterized the university for many years. Participants embraced the moment with pride and enthusiasm, and the venue was filled with laughter, applause, and excitement.

Beyond the festivities, the 75th Founding Anniversary stood as a testament to the universityโ€™s enduring mission. Every story told, every performance put on, and every award given demonstrated a community bound by a single goal: to recognize the sacrifices made by the institution's founders while motivating the current generation to continue its legacy.

As the celebration concluded with an anniversary toast and the joyful fellowship that followed, one message became unmistakably clear: the University of Mindanao Panabo College is not simply celebrating 75 years of existenceโ€”it is celebrating 75 years of transforming lives, nurturing dreams, and empowering generations to shape a better future.

At doon kayo unti-unting nagkalayo.

Now I know why ๐™‹๐™–๐™ฅ๐™– falls into such quiet after work, his steps heavy, his words few, his gaze distant. There is a kind of exhaustion that words cannot carryโ€”burdens too large, too raw, too heavy to be spoken aloud. He rests in silence not because he has nothing to say, but because some sacrifices are better felt than explained.

Now I finally understand why ๐™ˆ๐™–๐™ข๐™– is always cleaningโ€”polishing every surface, arranging every thing in its place. For sometimes, it is far simpler to bring order to a room than to calm the storms swirling inside her own mind. Her hands stay busy, not just to keep our home neat, but to quiet the worries she never let us see.

And now I see why ๐™‹๐™–๐™ฅ๐™– never asks to wear my medals on graduation day. It is not pride he lacks, but a quiet fear he carries deep insideโ€”fear that his simple clothes and calloused hands will draw unwanted eyes, fear that the world will judge him, and in turn, judge me. He holds back his pride to shield me from mockery, never knowing that his humility shines brighter than any gold, that his name is the greatest honor I will ever carry.

Now it all unfolds why ๐™ˆ๐™–๐™ข๐™– always says she is โ€œalready fullโ€ every time we sit to eat at Jollibee, her plate barely touched. Because when the budget is stretched thin and every peso counts, she folds her own hunger away like a forgotten blanket. She feeds us until our laughter is loud and our hearts are light, choosing our joy over her own need, turning empty portions into love.

These are the loves that do not shout or demand attention, the kind that speak only through what they do, not what they say. They dwell in the clean floors, the quiet evenings, the half-eaten meals, and the medals kept safe in my hands. They flow like quiet rivers beneath the story of my life, nourishing every part of who I have become.

Now I finally understand that the deepest love does not always need a voiceโ€”it lives in every choice they made, the emotions and wants they suppressed, just so I could have more, and worry less.

istoriUM | Blessings Become Standards: Hedonic Treadmill Theory

There was a time when the things we have today were once our greatest dreams.

The phone in our hands was once something we wished for. The achievements we now overlook were once goals we worked hard to reach. Even the people in our lives were once those we prayed would stay.

Yet after some time, the excitement fades.

Psychologists call this the Hedonic Treadmill Theoryโ€”the idea that people quickly get used to good things and return to their normal level of happiness. A new phone feels exciting at first, but eventually it becomes ordinary. A promotion brings joy, but soon we begin wanting another one. Even major achievements lose their spark with time.

It is like running on a treadmill: no matter how fast we run, we remain in the same place.

This leads to what we may call the inflation of happiness.

Just as inflation reduces the value of money, constant success and pleasure can reduce the feeling of happiness. What once made us happy is no longer enough. We start wanting something bigger, better, or newer.

The dream becomes normal.

The normal becomes expected.

And the expected becomes insufficient.

This is why some people have everything they once wished for, yet still feel incomplete. Happiness that depends only on achievements, wealth, or possessions keeps moving farther away, like a finish line that never stays in one place.

The problem is not that humans dream or strive for more. Growth is part of life. The problem begins when we forget to appreciate what we already have while chasing what we do not.

The Hedonic Treadmill Theory reminds us of an important truth: lasting happiness does not come only from gaining more, but also from learning to value the present.

Because sometimes, the life we complain about today is the very life our past self once dreamed of living.
