This photo shows the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier when it still stood in Fort Santiago in 1962. Just two years later, on November 30, 1964, during the 101st birth anniversary of Andres Bonifacio, the urn of the Unknown Soldier was transferred to the Libingan ng mga Bayani in Fort Bonifacio. President Diosdado Macapagal led the solemn transfer with full military and diplomatic honors, ensuring that the nationโs nameless heroes would be remembered in a fitting national shrine.
Tomorrow, the nation will once again honor its heroes as we commemorate National Heroes Day (25 August 2025) at the Libingan ng mga Bayani, with the theme "Isang Diwa, Isang Lahi, Isang Bayanihanโ (One Spirit, One Race, One Bayanihan). This holiday, observed every last Monday of August, has a rich historyโfirst declared in 1931 through Act No. 3827, shifted during the Japanese occupation, restored in 1952, and finally fixed in 2007 under Republic Act No. 9492.
National Heroes Day is a day of remembranceโfor both known and unknown heroes whose courage and sacrifice shaped our nation.
