âWHY FILIPINO GO ABROAD?â
(Pls excuse my grammar đ)
I was talking to a friend and we discussed why many of our countrymen go abroad and work as OFW. Even though most OFW are COLLEGE DEGREE HOLDERS, but we work as house maid, Nanny, caregivers, drivers.
But In fairness we have high position OFW like bank managers, nurses, doctors, engineers etc. But why do we go out of our country to seek a greener pastures.
It boiled down to âSALARYâ. Salary abroad are extremely higher than in our home country. But is this really the reason?Because I know some jobs in the Philippines that pays more than the salary of a lawyer here in the United States.
HERE IS MY THEORY:
We as Filipino are trained to be an excellent workers. From childhood we are trained to wash dishes, clean the house etc. even our educational system trained us to be an excellent workers like teachers, engineer, nurses and many more, and know that we are very successful in training our people to be an excellent workers that is why many foreign employers praise our workmanship.
Now this is the problem: We are trained to be an excellent workers not as âEXCELLENT BUSINESSMEN/WOMENâ Before I shifted to Hotel and Restaurant Management (1 of my 3 college degrees) I studied Business Management and even in Business management course we are trained to be an excellent office workers or âWHITE COLOR JOBâ. Itâs like you have only two choices
1. Be a manual laborer (blue color job)
2. Be an office worker (white color job)
We love saying âMY DREAM JOBâ instead of âMY DREAM BUSINESSâ
How many friends you have, who after college started a business of his own? Maybe 1 or 2 defending on how exclusive is your school. if you have classmates that came from a rich family who owned a business most probably they will just take over the family business.
Our educational system doesnât teach us how to create a business or âECONOMIC NEEDSâ to develop a new business venture.
1. It doesnât teach us to question ourselves âWHAT KIND OF BUSINESS YOU ARE GOOD AT AND HOW CAN YOU START IT?â
2. It doesnât teach us how to start up a business like apply for business permits (what are the permits you need to have in your business) how to prepare your taxes or labor code.
3. How to invest in STOCK MARKET how to read stocks movements.
4. History of industrialization how simple men like Henry Ford and John D. Rockefeller and others, who revolutionized America by creating âASSEMBLY LINESâ and âPIPE LINESâ âRAIL ROADSâ âSTOCKSâ and many more individuals who can âINSPIRE YOUNG PEOPLEâ to aspire for greater things.
A Businessman used to say âIf there is no need for your product, CREATE ONEâ
One good example of my theory are the CHINESE FILIPINO they came to the Philippines with the mindset of starting a business (Traders) not to be an employee but to be a businessman. They train their children not to be an employee but to be the boss of themselves. Either they continue the family business or they start their own, either way they are the boss of themselves.
Even in Mainland China even though the salary in china is cheaper than the Philippine the Chinese remain optimistic and start their own businesses either by selling online or building a manufacturing company. With the âMINDSET OF A BUSINESSMANâ they were able to bring their country to fame and glory UNDER A COMMUNIST RULE AND NOT EVEN IN A CAPITALIST RULE.
You need a real talent to be a millionaire or billionaire in a communist country. Billions if not Trillions of dollars goes back to China because of their products export and they donât even speak English the way the Filipino does.
SUGGESTIVE SOLUTION:
1. We should start educating our children to be a businessman let them see how you do your business and learn. Itâs time to change our old tradition that kids should not mingle with adult issues. They need to understand that in todayâs generation they have to be aggressive and learn the technique of selling and the sociology of the target consumers/customers.
2. Reorganize our Educational system from worker base system to Entrepreneur base system. We have 12 years in elementary and high school used that to teach technical skills and public speaking to build confidence so when they go to college their goal will NOT BE âI will finish this course so I can work in this company and get a high paying salaryâ BUT INSTEAD âI will finish this course so I can start my own businessâ
3. Government should encourage its people to create businesses and offer protection for investors and incentives for local businesses and export. Learn from the United States in every country they have a COMMERCIAL ATTACHĂ that help American to jump start their export business that are made in USA. We should create an agency that offer FREE ASSISTANCE for people who wants to invest in the Philippine. They will guide them on step by step in building the business they want. In that way the government will create Jobs for people who just want to be a workers. Or if most Filipino are businessman/woman we will start hiring FOREIGN WORKERS instead of us going to Foreign land.
4. Let us bring back the motto of former President Ferdinand Marcos âBAWAL ANG TAMAD SA PILIPINAS (Lazy are prohibited in the Philippines)â This is a good propaganda in Psychology they call it âNEUROLINGUISTIC PROGRAMMINGâ.
The list can go on... you may have some good idea to add on to the list. But the bottom line is, âWE NEED TO TRAIN OUR YOUNG PEOPLE TO BE A BUSINESSMAN/WOMAN AND NOT AS A REGULAR LABORERSâ Iâm not saying that being a laborer is bad but I know you understand my point.
So my goal for the next 5 years (Beside serving God in the Ministry) is to start a business in the Philippines it may or may not become a successful business but at least before I die, I know I face life challenges with great courage and endurance and leave a legacy that will be written in my graveyard tomb that say...
âNAGMAHAL, NASAKTAN, NAGNEGOSYOâ đđđ
