On September 10, 2026, Fulcrum published an editorial cartoon addressing an issue of public and social concern. Following its publication, the work drew criticism online, including accusations that it was politically partisan and inappropriate for a campus publication. The situation subsequently escalated beyond criticism of the work itself, with members of the publication becoming targets of personal attacks, red-tagging, harassment, and serious threats.
Fulcrum respects criticism. We recognize that our editorial work may not always be agreeable to everyone. However, disagreement with an editorial position does not, by itself, make a publication partisan, prejudiced, or biased.
Nonpartisanship does not mean being apolitical or silent on issues with political or social dimensions. It means maintaining independence from political parties, candidates, and partisan interests. A campus publication has the rightโand the responsibilityโto examine issues, question institutions, and take editorial positions while remaining grounded in facts, fairness, and journalistic ethics.
Republic Act No. 7079, or the Campus Journalism Act of 1991, recognizes the importance of campus press freedom and the editorial independence of student publications. This freedom carries a corresponding responsibility to practice journalism responsibly, ethically, and with accountability.
We are willing to be scrutinized for our work. Legitimate concerns about our content may be raised and addressed through proper and respectful channels. What we will not accept is the use of personal attacks, profanity, intimidation, or calls for punishment as substitutes for substantive criticism.
More seriously, threats directed at members of our publication are not something we will simply let slide. Fulcrum will document and preserve relevant evidence and, where appropriate, coordinate with the proper authorities and pursue available legal remedies. Our staff members have the right to perform their journalistic duties without being subjected to threats or intimidation.
We will continue to cover student affairs, campus life, education, technology, and issues affecting our students and community. We will not limit our journalism simply because an issue is controversial, politically sensitive, or uncomfortable.
We are student journalists, but we are still journalists. Being students does not diminish our responsibility to report, question, scrutinize, and engage with matters that affect the community we serve.
We welcome disagreement. We welcome scrutiny. We welcome accountability.
What we will not normalize is harassment, red-tagging, intimidation, or threats against student journalists for performing a legitimate journalistic function.
The Fulcrum Editorial Board and staff stand firmly for responsible, ethical, nonpartisan, and independent campus journalismโand we will continue to uphold that standard.
