Philippine native trees are those that naturally grow and are naturally found in the Philippines. Trees and species, in general, that are native to specific areas and cannot be found elsewhere are called endemic. An example of an endemic tree is the ๐๐จ๐จ๐ (๐๐ฆ๐ต๐ฆ๐ณ๐ด๐ช๐ข๐ฏ๐ต๐ฉ๐ถ๐ด ๐ฒ๐ถ๐ข๐ฅ๐ณ๐ช๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐ต๐ถ๐ด), also known as the ๐๐ก๐ข๐ฅ๐ข๐ฉ๐ฉ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ซ๐จ๐ฌ๐๐ฐ๐จ๐จ๐. This species is one of the largest trees in the country and is commonly found in primary rainforests, on hillsides, near riverbanks, and in swampy and cool places, from sea level up to 400 m.
Native trees are crucial for our local species. They are well-adapted to our climate, more resilient, and relatively self-sustaining. By planting native trees that match a particular site, we help our local biodiversity thrive and mitigate disaster-induced risks.
School leaders from various areas in the Leyte Division participated in a tree planting activity at Brgy. Camansihay, Tacloban City. When planning to plant trees, we must first consider site-matching and the goal of the activity. The Toog tree is already listed as "Near Threatened" by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as of 2020.
Remember your Science 9? Before they become threatened, endangered, or worst, extinct, let us join movements to preserve their species. By doing so, we not only promote our Philippine native trees but also preserve our local identityโas Filipinos.
Kaya't pahalagahan at piliin natin ang ating mga katutubong kahoy. โ๐ฑ

School DRRM and YES-O student leaders from various areas of Leyte Division participated in a training session held from October 23-25, 2024, at Milka Hotel, Tacloban City.
Day 1 session highlighted the different legal bases for implementing the Youth for Environment in Schools Organization (YES-O).
Day 2 commenced with a talk on the importance of Philippine native trees in biodiversity and environmental preservation. This was followed by a seminar on hazard awareness and a DRRM situationer for Leyte Division. To make the session meaningful and relevant, student leaders collaboratively worked on school hazard mapping and role identification in disaster preparedness. Meanwhile, school coordinators took part on a separate breakout session to craft action plans aimed at empowering their student leaders in program implementation. Outputs from these workshops were later presented. The day concluded with a social night where participants enjoyed games and showcased their talents.
Day 3 started early with a tree planting activity at Brgy. Camansihay, Tacloban City. The three-day training concluded with the awarding of certificates to the student leaders and school coordinators.
Princes Geanne T. Ongsansoy, Palo NHS YES-O Vice President and Palo I District Federated Vice President, participated in the training along with the Palo NHS YES-O School Coordinator, Ma'am Anna Jane Gayas.
