The University of the Philippines Manila School of Health Sciences (UPMSHS) formally launched its 50th founding anniversary today in Palo, Leyte, marking the beginning of a year-long celebration honoring five decades of service, training, and community-based health education.
The event gathered national and regional leaders, including Atty. Angelo Jimenez Jr., President of the University of the Philippines; Dr. Michael Tee, Chancellor of UP Manila; directors and representatives from the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), Department of Health (DOH), and the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG); as well as officials from the Tingog Partylist and various local government unit partners across Eastern Visayas, including Palo, Alangalang, Dulag, Pastrana, Sta. Fe, Tolosa, Dagami, Tanauan, and partner institutions such as EVMC.
In their messages, speakers emphasized UPMSHSโs enduring mission of forming health professionals rooted in service, compassion, and selflessnessโespecially for underserved and remote communities. They highlighted the institutionโs unique model of community-based education that produces health workers who directly serve the people.
UP President Jimenez underscored the continuing global demand for Filipino health professionals, particularly nurses, who are regarded as modern-day heroes. He noted that remittances from overseas Filipino workers contribute significantly to the national economy, while stressing that UPMSHS graduates must remain grounded in service to the country. He also emphasized the idea of โinterlocalization,โ or the capacity to create meaningful impact within and across local communities through collaborative service delivery.
A key highlight of the program was the awarding of 11 scholars under the Medical Scholarship and Return Service Program. The scholars formally signed their commitment agreements, pledging to serve in underserved areas after completing their training and passing the licensure examinations over the next five years.
The celebration also featured cultural performances from students of Saint Therese Educational Foundation of Tacloban Inc., Leyte Normal University, and UP Manila School of Health Sciences showcasing the richness of local talent and youth participation in the milestone event.
As UPMSHS celebrates 50 years of transformative health education, the institution reaffirms its commitment to producing compassionate, community-oriented health professionals dedicated to serving where they are needed most.
Stay tuned as we share more photos from the event.
