MALALAG, DAVAO DEL SUR โ€” August 29, 2026

The ABS-CBN Foundation International and Programa Genio, Inc. formally turned over the food-processing and small engine to the ALS Senior High School Program of the Davao del Sur School of Fisheries (DSSF) and the ALS Bangkarunungan Learning Center during a ceremonial turnover held at the DSSF Gymnasium.

The donated equipment will support the skills development and hands-on learning of ALS Senior High School learners of the Davao del Sur School of Fisheries, while also providing opportunities for community members to acquire practical and livelihood-related skills.

The activity was graced by Department of Education Alternative Education Bureau Director Marilette R. Almayda, Regional ALS Focal Person Maricel Langahid, Davao del Sur Schools Division Superintendent Lorenzo E. Mendoza, and Malalag Municipal Mayor Hon. Ma. Zorrahyda T. Valentin, together with personnel and representatives from various government agencies and partner organizations.

Representatives from the ABS-CBN Foundation International and Programa Genio, Inc., including Teacher Maricar Estole, led the ceremonial turnover as part of their continuing partnership and support for education, skills development, and community empowerment.

The food processing equipment will be utilized by ALS Senior High School learners of DSSF to strengthen their technical competencies through practical and hands-on training. The equipment is expected to provide learners with additional opportunities to develop skills that may prepare them for employment, entrepreneurship, and further education.

Meanwhile, the small engine equipment was turned over to fisherfolk engaged in fish cage activities under the ALS Bangkarunungan Learning Center. The equipment will support the fisherfolk in developing practical skills related to the operation and maintenance of small engines used in their livelihood activities.

The donated equipment will also be made available to interested members of the community who wish to develop or enhance their skills in food processing and small engine operation and maintenance, and other livelihood-related competencies.

The turnover highlights the continuing collaboration among the Department of Education, local government units, ALS stakeholders, ABS-CBN Foundation International, and Programa Genio, Inc. in providing relevant resources and learning opportunities to ALS Senior High School learners and community beneficiaries in Davao del Sur.

Through the initiative, the ALS Senior High School Program of the Davao del Sur School of Fisheries gains additional learning resources that can strengthen skills-based education and provide learners with opportunities to translate classroom learning into practical competencies and potential livelihood opportunities.

The MABAMA Cluster successfully conducted its 1st Commencement Exercises for Alternative Learning System (ALS), School Year 2025โ€“2026 on June 27, 2026, at the Matanao Supergymnasium in Poblacion, Matanao, Davao del Sur. The ceremony honored ALS learners who successfully passed the 2025 Accreditation and Equivalency (A&E) Test, recognizing their remarkable achievements and perseverance.

A total of 293 ALS learners were recognized during the commencement exercises. Of this number, 49 learners successfully passed the Elementary Level A&E Test, while 238 learners passed the Junior High School Level A&E Test. In addition, six learners successfully completed the Basic Literacy Program (BLP), bringing them closer to achieving their educational goals.

The event brought together ALS completers, their families, teachers, school heads, education officials, and local government representatives to celebrate the graduates' success. Through determination and hard work, the learners earned qualifications equivalent to formal basic education, opening doors to higher education, employment, and greater opportunities.

The Department of Education demonstrated its strong commitment to inclusive and accessible education through the presence of key officials, including Christopher P. Felipe, Chief of the Curriculum Implementation Division; Dr. Eric C. Tubat, ALS Focal Person; Liartes Prasno, Education Program Specialist for ALS; and Jay Ar P. Ronda, Education Program Supervisor in Science.

School leaders also attended the celebration, including Daryl Joll T. Adona, Principal I of New Katipunan Elementary School; Alma R. Lim, Principal II of Sinawilan Elementary School; Judith C. Calabucal, Principal I of Barayong Central Elementary School; Riza Cyril A. Alajar, Head Teacher II of Pedro Arches National High School; Elene Marie Jane A. Gamboa, School Principal III of Matanao National High School; Geraldin V. Balili, District Principal-in-Charge of Matanao I District; Ronald P. Tingzon, District Principal-in-Charge of Magsaysay North District; Elizabeth A. Bernaldez, Public Schools District Supervisor of Bansalan East District; and Susan M. Obenza, Public Schools District Supervisor of Bansalan West District.

Representing the Office of the Vice Mayor of the Municipality of Matanao, John Dave M. Cabisay extended the local government's congratulations to the graduates. He praised the learners for their resilience and encouraged them to continue pursuing greater achievements through education.

One of the highlights of the ceremony was the inspirational message delivered by guest speaker Allan Lapiz Quiapo, Teacher I of Matanao National High Schoolโ€“Senior High School and a former ALS learner. Drawing from his own journey, Quiapo shared how the Alternative Learning System gave him a second chance to complete his education and eventually fulfill his dream of becoming a teacher.

Quiapo recalled the challenges he encountered as an ALS learner and emphasized that determination, perseverance, and faith enabled him to overcome life's obstacles. His inspiring testimony resonated deeply with the graduates, many of whom had experienced similar struggles while pursuing their education.

He challenged the graduates to see their accomplishment not as the end of their journey but as the beginning of new opportunities. He encouraged them to continue their education, pursue vocational or higher learning, and use their stories to inspire others to never give up on their dreams.

Throughout the ceremony, the graduates proudly received recognition as successful passers of the 2025 ALS Accreditation and Equivalency (A&E) Test. Their achievement reflected monthsโ€”and for many, yearsโ€”of dedication, perseverance, and commitment to lifelong learning.

Education leaders commended the graduates for their resilience and hard work. They emphasized that the Alternative Learning System continues to provide out-of-school youth, adult learners, and individuals seeking a second chance with meaningful opportunities to complete their basic education and improve their quality of life.

The 1st MABAMA Cluster ALS Commencement Exercises celebrated resilience, hope, and the transformative power of education. The event reaffirmed that the Alternative Learning System creates pathways for learners to overcome barriers and pursue brighter futures.

The successful conduct of the commencement exercises also strengthened the shared commitment of the Department of Education, local government units, ALS implementers, and community stakeholders to empower every learner through inclusive education and create more opportunities for lifelong success.

Some women carry books
in one hand
and responsibility in the other,
walking different paths
but moving forward with the same courage.

Some are teachersโ€”
guiding patiently,
opening doors for learners
who once believed
learning had already passed them by.

Some are mothers
returning to the classroom
after years of putting
their dreams on hold,
proving that it is never too late
to begin again.

Some are young girls
quietly discovering their voices,
slowly realizing
that their dreams
deserve space in this world.

Today we celebrate
the women who teach,
the women who learn,
and the girls
who are just beginning to dream.

Happy International Womenโ€™s Day ๐ŸŒธ
