Re: How useful are explanations in the ESL Setting?
Who doesn't appreciate a well-articulated concept with clear illustrations that drive home a point? In high school and college, we relish such carefully constructed sentences that introduce and clarify complex ideas. However, research suggests that in language learning, lengthy explanations may not offer the same benefits. This challenge intensifies when explanations are delivered in the target language, which learners have only a limited grasp of. In such cases, a long explanation can indeed miss the mark.
One could argue that using the student's native language might make explanations easier to understand. While this approach might help initially, it could hinder progress over time. Language structures vary significantly, and a direct translation could either partially clarify or, in the worst case, reshape the student’s perception of the new language.
More than just an explanation, students need immersive experiences that promote word association and contextual understanding. Exposure to meaningful samples of language—like images, examples, and real-life communication—enables students to grasp and retain language better.
So, dear teachers, we encourage you to step beyond explanations and communicate actively with your students through context and interaction. Language acquisition is not simply about understanding words; it’s about connecting those words to the world around us.
