Peter’s College of Ormoc
Pathway to a brighter tomorrow
HUMBLE BEGINNINGS
ittle, if at all, did the Ormocanons at the turn of the century realize that from a humble and unpretentious beginning, St. Peter’s College of Ormoc would now stand as a bulwark of Christian education this side of the Philippines. Peter’s College of Ormoc, the oldest Catholic school in Leyte, was founded by Fr. The
school was originally called Colegio Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe and was run by the Sisters of Compania de Jesus. With the offering of a complete intermediate course in 1926, it was renamed St. In 1930, the Missionary Benedictine Sisters of the Philippines took over the administration and called the school St. In 1966, it became St. Peter’s College of Ormoc when it first opened its portals to college students. Programs offered were: Education, Liberal Arts, Commerce, Secretarial and vocational short-term courses. In 1970, the Guidance Department was organized and in 1993, the department was chosen Best Guidance Center in the Ormoc City Division. In the same year, the High School Department was a recipient of the half-million worth of mathematics and science laboratory materials and teachers training from DOST-SEI ESEP granted to 15 private secondary schools all over the country. In 1994, The Grade School Department was awarded Excellent Private Elementary School in Region 8 and in 1997, the SPC-ROTC Unit garnered the Best Unit in the whole Philippines. The school’s quality academic standing was confirmed by its PAASCU accreditation status in 1998 when the Grade School Unit passed the formal PAASCU survey and the High School Unit foolowed in 2000. Peter’s College building structure on the main campus and annex lot across the street depicts a history of vicissitudes and survival. The imposing original San Pedro building of 1914 was destroyed by typhoons in 1928 and 1931. During the war, the 1944 Battle of Ormoc Corridor razed the building to the ground. Civic-spirited Ormocanons rendered moral and financial support to the Sisters aided by the Archbishop of Palo. The rebuilt wood structure of 1947 gave way to a gymnasium in 1975. The decision was precipitated by fears brought about by the earthquakes in southern cities of Zamboanga and Cotabato. This gym was demolished to give way in 2002 to the massive steel structure, the present SPC gymnasium. The present main building started in 1965 as a four-storey L shaped building with Sts. Peter and Paul wings. To these were added in 1971 Sts. Benedict and Scholastica’s wings, forming an inner quadrangle. The grade school St. Hildegard building with four storeys was constructed in 1997. The administration offices were housed in a structure built in 1950 together with the Sister’s chapel and convent. The latter gave way to an entirely new structure in 1982. By 2003, the chapel has enlarged to accommodate a class of students. The two-storey wooden piano house of 1950 is intact and has undergone interior renovation. The concrete one-storey building of St. Benedict Socio Pastoral Center on the same lot was built in 1990. The present building survived the historic typhoon Uring which claimed 8,000 lives in 1991. Peter’s College of Ormoc has maintained its tract record of academic excellence and solid Christian Benedictine formation. The school is proud of her alumni in all fields of endeavor in the city of Ormoc and beyond, even to foreign shores. PRESENT STATUS

It has two campuses, the main campus with two concrete four storey buildings which house the high school, grade school, and college students and while the campus across the street which has the preschoolers (Nursery, Kinder, and Prep) the Piano House and the St. Benedict Socio-Pastoral Center (SBSPC), the Benedictine Sisters and the school’s outreach arm . On the ground floor of the Sisters’ convent is found the school chapel and school canteen beside it. The newly finished “Tuluyan ni San Pedro”, a mini-hotel, located at the north-eastern wing of the school campus, was blessed last March 2007. The mini-hotel houses BSHRM students starting June 2007. The SPC Website at www.spc-ormoc.edu.ph was launched last June 18, 2004. Its launching marked SPC’s coming of age in the information technology. The website enhances the quality of computer science educators, which the school offers. It also provides timely support to the school to answer immediate querries about the school from prospective clientele and alumni here and abroad. The past and present members of the SPC Community are grateful to Fr. Ismael Cataag, school’s founder; the generous Ormocanons for their support moral or otherwise; the dedicated then and now SPC lay educators; and the Benedictine Sisters who have committed their lives to providing the Ormocanons a Catholic Benedictine formation.
