SEP 22 | MEMORIAL OF ST. THOMAS OF VILLANUEVA
St. Thomas of Villanueva was a Spanish Augustinian friar, priest, and archbishop known for his profound charity toward the poor and his dedication to reforming the Church. Born in 1488, he entered the Order of St. Augustine and became a respected preacher and teacher before being appointed Archbishop of Valencia. Despite his high ecclesiastical position, he lived simply and remained deeply concerned for those suffering from poverty and hardship. He distributed much of his wealth to the poor, established charitable institutions, and personally cared for those in need. As a bishop, he also worked for the spiritual renewal of the clergy and the faithful, emphasizing the importance of authentic Christian living. His generosity flowed from a deep love for Christ and a conviction that the goods entrusted to us are meant to be shared with others. St. Thomas of Villanueva reminds us that Christian leadership is inseparable from compassion, generosity, and service. May his example inspire us to use whatever blessings and responsibilities God entrusts to us not for ourselves alone, but for the good of others and the building of His Kingdom.
