TINGNAN: “Destructive.” This word is how Maria Filipina N. Dela Cruz, a secretary of the Mambuquiao Coconut Farmers Association, described the significant impact of pests and diseases on their coconut farm. She shared her firsthand experience during the first batch of the Training on Integrated Pest Management for Coconut Farmers, with 31 participants, held on September 2–4, 2026, at the GLS Agricultural Integrated Farm.

ATI RTC 6 Empowers 30 Aklan Coconut Farmers through Cacao Integration Training under CFIDP

BANGA, AKLAN — August 6, 2026 — To boost farm productivity and expand income streams for local coconut growers, the Agricultural Training Institute–Regional Training Center 6 (ATI RTC 6), in partnership with the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA), successfully conducted the Training on Coconut-Based Farming System: Cacao Integration (Batch 1) from August 4 to 6 at the GLS Agricultural Integrated Farm.

The three-day intensive training capacitated 30 coconut farmers from across the province of Aklan, all registered beneficiaries under the Coconut Farmers and Industry Development Plan (CFIDP).

Through a blend of technical lectures and practical field exercises, participants gained hands-on expertise in sustainable intercropping strategies designed to optimize coconut lands. Key training modules covered:

Variety Identification & Planting Systems: Selection of high-yielding cacao varieties suited for intercropping, along with proper spacing, layout designs, and planting patterns under mature coconut palms.

Plant Propagation Techniques: Practical demonstration and application of asexual propagation methods, including budding and grafting, to ensure quality planting materials.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM): Eco-friendly pest and disease identification and management strategies tailored for cacao-coconut ecosystems.

Post-Harvest Processing & Value Addition: Standards for pod harvesting, bean classification, fermentation, and hands-on processing of raw cacao into market-ready tablea (traditional cacao blocks).

By diversifying coconut monoculture with high-value crops like cacao, the initiative aims to maximize land utilization, mitigate price volatility risks for coconut producers, and establish sustainable rural agribusinesses in Aklan.

GLS Training Center Inc. Celebrates Certified Agri-Scholars Under TESDA TWSP Program

NEW WASHINGTON, AKLAN — GLS Training Center Inc., in strong partnership with the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), proudly announces that 19 out of 23 candidates (82.61%) have successfully achieved full certification in Agricultural Crops Production NC II.

The scholars officially earned their "Competent" status during the recent rigorous National Competency Assessment. This assessment evaluates essential skills in modern farming. It includes land preparation, crop nursery operations, planting, crop care, and harvest procedures.

The training was funded through the TESDA Training for Work Scholarship Program (TWSP). This initiative aims to provide equitable access to quality tech-voc education. It bridges the gap between raw passion and industry-ready skills.

The program equips scholars to meet the growing demands of the agricultural sector."We are incredibly proud of our newly certified scholars," said the Center Administrator of GLS Training Center Inc. "Achieving an 82.61% passing rate is a testament to the dedication of our trainees and instructors.

These certified professionals are now ready to bring modern, efficient, and sustainable farming practices into the field."With their newly acquired National Certificate (NC) II, the 19 successful graduates are now fully recognized skilled workers.

They are qualified to pursue careers as agricultural farm workers, nursery operators, or agri-entrepreneurs. For the 4 candidates who are "not yet competent," the center remains dedicated to providing ongoing mentoring and support to help them pass their reassessments in the future.

GLS Training Center Inc. and TESDA remain committed to empowering more Filipinos through accessible skills training. They continue to build a highly competent and resilient workforce for the future.

ATI-RTC 6 Caps 10-Day Rice Production TOT for 32 Farmer Technicians at GLS Agricultural Integrated Farm

NEW WASHINGTON, Aklan — To strengthen local agricultural extension forces, a total of 32 Local Farmer Technicians (LFTs) successfully completed the intensive Training of Trainers (TOT) on Rice Production, held from June 15 to June 24, 2026, at the GLS Agricultural Integrated Farm in Barangay Mataphao.

The primary objective of the 10-day program was to scale up the technical competencies and teaching methodologies of local agricultural leaders.
The training effectively transitioned the 32 participants into capable extension partners of the government, ready to cascade innovative and sustainable farming practices directly to grassroots farming communities.Bridging theory with actual field practice, the curriculum required participants to undergo extensive hands-on technical activities.

The curriculum focused heavily on the 9 key checks of the PalayCheck System, hands-on farm mechanization, digital tools, and transformational leadership traits necessary to facilitate future Farmer Field Schools (FFS). LFTs engaged in rigorous in-field crop diagnostics and Agro-Ecosystem Analysis (AESA) to evaluate soil health and pest populations.

Furthermore, they underwent practical training in farm machinery operation, mastering the use and field maintenance of modern rice production and post-harvest technologies to drive local mechanization goals.

The community-wide impact of this training ensures a direct line of knowledge transfer to everyday rice farmers. By deploying these 32 certified trainers back to their respective municipalities, the region can expect a collective boost in crop yields, reduced post-harvest losses, minimized labor costs, and enhanced rice self-sufficiency.

The management of GLS Agricultural Integrated Farm expresses its sincere appreciation to the Agricultural Training Institute – Regional Training Center VI (ATI-RTC 6), led by its Center Director Mary Ann Acibar-Ramos , for providing the necessary resources and learning opportunities to mold the region's agricultural workforce. Special acknowledgment is also extended to the dedicated pool of Resource Persons whose technical expertise and invaluable field guidance ensured the optimal success of the training program.
