Tecson and the First Philippine Republic in 1899. In recognition of their faithfulness to their nation, President Emilio Aguinaldo issued a decree recognizing the soldiers as Friends of the Filipino people and ensuring their safe passage back to Spain. Formal diplomatic relations between the two countries began in 1947 and will celebrate its 80th anniversary in 2027.
