NEWS | NavSci takes proactive action, allays rising safety threats
After recent shooting incidents in schools that raised significant danger on studentโs security, Navotas National Science High School (NavSci) tightened its safety precautions and strictly implemented bag inspections every morning among students last June 23, 2026.
The move came after the Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Sonny Angara stressed the launch of the School Safety Campaign in a press release that aims to strengthen the protection of learners and safety measures of the schools.
โWe are moving with urgency because protecting our children is our absolute priority and our schools must strictly remain safe zones for learning,โ Angara emphasized.
The heightened measures followed a tragic incident on June 22 in Tacloban City, where a 14 and 15-year-old student, motivated by a bullying grudge that authorities claimed was further influenced by video games, left three students dead and seven students wounded.
Meanwhile, in an interview among Scienistas, mixed opinions were collected.
โWhen I first heard the news, I felt anxious and overwhelmed about my safety and I think the students were heavily influenced online because a young teenager with a healthy mental health wouldnโt pick up a gun and shoot it at other people because of a sole grudge,โ a Grade 11 student, Emmanuel Juatan, shared.
โItโs basically negligence of the parents and those in power that gave the fi****ms, itโs what prompted these students,โ another Grade 11 student, Aldriana Perez, argued.
Teachers also shared the same sentiments and sympathy that schools should be a safe space for students to learn and grow, with peace of mind that no danger or peril will occur.
Thus, DepEd also directed the School Division Offices (SDOs) to coordinate with the local police, barangay officials, and parents to guarantee collective action on safety concerns.
