𝗛𝗔𝗣𝗣𝗬 𝗟𝗔𝗣𝗨𝗟𝗔𝗣𝗨 𝗗𝗔𝗬!

We join the Filipino people in remembering Lapulapu and the people of Mactan on the 505th anniversary of the Kadaugan sa Mactan (Victory in Mactan).

On 27 April 1521, forces under the command of Lapulapu defeated a Spanish raid led by the Portuguese navigator Ferdinand Magellan on the shores of Mactan Island.

The battle erupted from a leadership dispute between Lapulapu and Rajah Humabon of neighboring Sugbo (present day Cebu) wherein Magellan offered to attack Mactan on behalf of Humabon as a demonstration of European fighting prowess and as a sign of their friendship. Magellan and his fleet found themselves in Cebu during their expedition in search of the Spice Islands of the Mollucas.

After their defeat at the hands of the warriors of Mactan, the surviving Spanish were later chased out of Cebu by Humabon and went on to other parts of the present day Philippines and Southeast Asia. Sebastian Elcano, captain of the ship Victoria, and his crew continued their journey back to Spain via a route through the Indian Ocean and completed the earliest recorded circumnavigation of the World.

After the battle, little else was recorded on Lapulapu’s subsequent life. In recognition of their triumph against foreign intervention, the anniversary of the battle was made a special working holiday throughout the Philippines and a special non-working holiday in the City of Lapu-Lapu, Cebu by virtue of Republic Act No. 11040 (29 June 2018).

𝗣𝗕𝗕𝗠 𝗧𝗢 𝗟𝗘𝗔𝗗 𝗥𝗘𝗠𝗘𝗠𝗕𝗥𝗔𝗡𝗖𝗘 𝗢𝗡 𝟴𝟰𝗧𝗛 𝗔𝗥𝗔𝗪 𝗡𝗚 𝗞𝗔𝗚𝗜𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚𝗔𝗡

President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. will lead the Filipino people in remembering and honoring veterans during the commemorative rites for the 84th Araw ng Kagitingan (Day of Valor) on 9 April 2026. He will be joined by Japanese Ambassador Endo Kazuya and Mr. Robert Ewing, Charge d’Affaires of the Embassy of the United States of America in offering flowers at the Dambana ng Kagitingan, Mt. Samat National Shrine in Pilar, Bataan. Following the flower offering, the gathered veterans will undertake the traditional “Tolling of the Bells” in the memory of those who died in battle and those who had already passed on.
This will be conducted by Mr. Miguel Angelo C. Villa-Real, National Executive Vice President of the VFP Sons and Daughters Association and Ms. Prisca Angela Maureen L. Andales of the Cupang Integrated School. Balanga Bishop Rufino C. Sescon, Jr., Bataan Governor Jose Enrique S. Garcia III, NHCP Chair Regalado Trota Jose, Jr., and National Defense Secretary Gilberto C. Teodoro, Jr. will join the president during the program.

Araw ng Kagitingan commemorates the fall of Bataan during the Philippine Campaign 1941-1942 of the Second World War. Following more than three months of valiant combat against better equipped and supplied Imperial Japanese forces, Filipino and American forces surrendered organized resistance to preclude heavier losses. Following their surrender, the prisoners-of-war endured the brutal Bataan Death March, a forced march of more than 100 kilometers in the summer heat without food or water from Bataan to San Fernando, Pampanga where they were transported by train to Camp O’Donnell in Tarlac.

Thousands of Filpino and American soldiers were killed by injuries, starvation, dehydration, and violence from their captors. However, the surrender also inspired thousands of Filipinos to rise up and join guerrilla units that continued to fight against the Imperial Japanese forces that occupied the archipelago. Keeping the faith, their efforts in harassing enemy forces, supporting communities, and gathering key intelligence would greatly help in the eventual campaign to liberate the country in 1944-1945.

The NHCP is the national government agency mandated to promote Philippine history through its museums, research, and publications, and to preserve historical heritage through conservation and the marking of historic sites and structures.

Mula sa mga 𝗶𝗻𝗮, 𝗸𝗮𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗱, 𝗸𝗮𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗴𝗮𝗻, hanggang sa mga 𝗹𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿 at 𝗯𝗮𝘆𝗮𝗻𝗶 – kayo ang 𝗽𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘀𝘆𝗼𝗻 ng 𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗹𝗶𝗽𝘂𝗻𝗮𝗻 at 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘆𝗼𝗻 𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗶. Ito ay ginanap kaninang umaga habang isinasagawa ang 𝗙𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗗𝗮𝘆 2026 sa 𝗦𝗮𝗻 𝗥𝗼𝗾𝘂𝗲 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹. 𝓕𝓸𝓻𝓽𝔂 𝔂𝓮𝓪𝓻𝓼 𝓪𝓰𝓸, 𝓽𝓱𝓮 𝓔𝓓𝓢𝓐 𝓟𝓮𝓸𝓹𝓵𝓮 𝓟𝓸𝔀𝓮𝓻 𝓡𝓮𝓿𝓸𝓵𝓾𝓽𝓲𝓸𝓷 𝓫𝓮𝓰𝓪𝓷.

In response to a call for support from the rebel troops that sought refuge in Camp Aguinaldo and Camp Crame in Quezon City, Manila Archbishop Jaime Cardinal Sin made a series of historic broadcasts over Radio Veritas calling for the people to gather around the two military camps in order to prevent violence and bloodshed.

Answering the call of Cardinal Sin and other leading figures, thousands of people began to make their way to EDSA and the surrounding streets that bordered the two military bases. This would mark the first night of what would be known as "People Power."
