On this day, the 𝐁𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐌𝐢𝐝𝐰𝐚𝐲 marked a major turning point in World War II.

The Imperial Japanese Navy sought to capture Midway Atoll and destroy the remaining U.S. aircraft carriers after Pearl Harbor. Instead, American forces successfully defended the island, forcing Japan to retreat and shift to a defensive position for the rest of the war.

More than just a naval victory, Midway changed the momentum of the Pacific War and demonstrated how strategy, intelligence, and determination can alter the course of history.

At SOLAES, we remember moments like these because understanding the past helps us better understand the world today.

Ngayong Pride Month, ipinagdiriwang natin ang tapang, katatagan, at pagkakakilanlan ng LGBTQIA+ community. Higit pa ito sa makukulay na bandera at selebrasyon. Ito ay panahon ng pagkilala sa mga patuloy na lumalaban para sa respeto, pagtanggap, at pantay na karapatan.

Sa kabila ng mga hakbang tungo sa pag-unlad, marami pa rin ang nakararanas ng diskriminasyon, panghuhusga, at hindi patas na pagtrato. Ang mga hamong ito ay hindi lamang personal na suliranin kundi mga isyung dapat tugunan ng buong lipunan.

𝗣𝗥𝗜𝗗𝗘 𝗠𝗢𝗡𝗧𝗛 is not just about visibility. It is about equality, dignity, and the freedom to be yourself without fear.

We also express our sincerest gratitude to our advisers, Ms. Rea Frenshell N. Villegas and Mr. Jobert T. Sambitan, whose guidance and trust continuously helped us turn plans into reality.

𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗥𝗼𝗼𝘁𝘀: According to Visayan Historian and UP Prof. Rolando Borrinaga, On May 11, 1992, Biliran officially became an independent province after decades as a sub-province of Leyte—made possible by 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗔𝗰𝘁 𝗡𝗼. 𝟳𝟭𝟲𝟬 and 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗹𝗮𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗡𝗼. 𝟭𝟳𝟰. It was more than a legal act; it was the fulfillment of a long-standing dream for self-governance and identity.

The name “Biliran” itself holds meaning. But long before the early Spanish era, it was known as the 𝗜𝘀𝗹𝗮 𝗗𝗲 𝗣𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗼. Some trace it to 𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘳, a Visayan word for edges or ridges—mirroring the island’s sharp character and terrain. Others believe it comes from 𝘣𝘰𝘳𝘰𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘳𝘢𝘯, a native grass that once thrived across the island, symbolizing growth rooted in nature.

As the Biliran Hymn beautifully puts it, “𝙃𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙡𝙞𝙚 𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙚𝙛𝙖𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙨, 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙞𝙧 𝙙𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙢𝙨 𝙙𝙞𝙫𝙞𝙣𝙚 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙖𝙣 𝙞𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙥𝙚𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙋𝙧𝙤𝙫𝙞𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝘽𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙧𝙖𝙣.” This celebration is not just about remembering the past—it’s about carrying that dream forward with “𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙝𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙩𝙨, 𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙨𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙨, 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙩𝙤 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙨𝙥𝙚𝙧 𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙩𝙝𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙮𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙨.”

Today, May 5, our 𝕻𝖆𝖓𝖚𝖑𝖔𝖓𝖉𝖔𝖓 𝖚𝖌 𝕶𝖆𝖚𝖌𝖒𝖆𝖔𝖓: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗢𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝗻𝗻𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 was formally recognized and renewed at the Student Development and Services Office (SDSO) and the Office of the Student Regent (OSR)—a testament to the organization’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and excellence.

This remarkable feat would not have been possible without the unwavering efforts of the people behind the organization. To our dedicated officers and members, thank you for your hard work, coordination, and commitment in ensuring that every requirement was accomplished with excellence and efficiency.

Today, we honor the Filipino workers who keep the nation moving—manggagawa sa pabrika, magsasaka sa bukid, drivers, vendors, professionals, and every laborer whose sweat fuels our economy. Ngunit hindi sapat ang pagkilala kung ang sahod ay kulang, ang trabaho ay hindi sigurado, at ang karapatan ay patuloy na nilalabag.

Across the country, many workers still face low wages, contractualization, unsafe working conditions, and limited social protection. These are not isolated struggles—they are systemic issues that demand concrete solutions and genuine political will.

𝗟𝗔𝗕𝗢𝗥 𝗗𝗔𝗬 is not just a celebration—it is a reminder that the fight for living wages, job security, dignity, and workers’ rights continues.
