NASIPIT, AGUSAN DEL NORTE โ€” August 21, 2026 โ€” Two officers of the Historical Society of Saint Michael College of Caraga secured second-place finishes in their respective categories during the Municipal Schools Press Conference (MSPC) 2026 held at Nasipit National Vocational School (NNVS).

Nick Ranz Lee A. Felias, a Grade 10 student of St. Paul, placed second in Column Writing โ€“ Secondary English, while Jhun Erven Salvo, a Grade 11 student of St. Julia, earned second place in News Writing โ€“ Secondary Filipino.

Their achievements reflect the dedication, perseverance, and critical thinking required of student journalists as they competed alongside fellow campus journalists from different schools. Through their respective writing categories, Felias and Salvo demonstrated the power of student journalism in informing readers, expressing meaningful perspectives, and amplifying the voices of young people.

As officers of the Historical Society, their success extends beyond their individual accomplishments. It also reflects their commitment to excellence, leadership, and continuous growth both within and beyond the organization. Their achievement serves as an inspiration to fellow members to pursue their passions, develop their talents, and use their voices purposefully.

The Historical Society proudly congratulates Nick Ranz Lee A. Felias and Jhun Erven Salvo on this remarkable achievement. May this milestone inspire them to continue honing their craft, pursuing excellence, and using the power of words to inform, inspire, and make a meaningful impact.

On August 21, we commemorate Ninoy Aquino Day, a day dedicated to remembering the life, courage, and enduring legacy of Benigno Ninoy Aquino Jr. More than a name in the pages of Philippine history, Ninoy became a symbol of courage, patriotism, and the unwavering pursuit of democracy. At a time when speaking for freedom required immense bravery, he chose to stand firm in his beliefs and for the Filipino people, even in the face of uncertainty and adversity.

His story reminds us that meaningful change does not always begin with power or authority, but with ordinary citizens who are willing to speak, stand, and act for what they believe is right. His sacrifice became part of a larger struggle for democratic freedom and continues to remind generations that the rights and liberties we value today should never be taken for granted.

As we honor Ninoy Aquino, may we look beyond the historical events and reflect on the values his life represents: courage in the face of fear, patriotism beyond personal interest, and hope for a nation where every Filipino has the freedom to be heard. Remembering his legacy is not only about looking back at the past, but also about understanding our responsibility in the present and the future.

May this day inspire us to become more informed, responsible, and compassionate citizens. May we value our freedom, protect our democracy, learn from our history, and use our voices with purpose. The legacy of Ninoy Aquino lives not only in our history books, but in every Filipino who continues to believe that a better Philippines is worth striving for.

TODAY IN HISTORY!

On 8 August 1967, five gentlemen โ€“ the Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia, along with the Foreign Ministers of Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand โ€“ gathered in the main hall of the Department of Foreign Affairs building in Bangkok, Thailand, and signed a document. By virtue of that document, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) was established. Adam Malik of Indonesia, Narciso R. Ramos of the Philippines, Tun Abdul Razak of Malaysia, S. Rajaratnam of Singapore, and Thanat Khoman of Thailand would later be recognised as the Founding Fathers of arguably the most successful inter-governmental organisation in the developing world today. The document they signed would be known as the ASEAN Declaration.
