TEACHER, IKAW NAMAN!
Stern on the Outside, Genuine at Heart
Having built a reputation as a stern, commanding, and principled teacher with more than two decades of dedicated service in the Department of Education, he is the kind of educator whose mere presence can quiet a room. Some may find him intimidating or daunting, while others may even think twice before approaching him.
Yet behind that formidable aura is an easy-going, warm-hearted, approachable, and genuinely caring person.
As a colleague, he speaks his mind and never hesitates to express what he thinks. But he does so with sincerity and good intentions. Working with him is comfortable because you always know where you stand with him, there is no pretense, no unnecessary complication, and no guessing about what he truly means.
As a teacher, Mr. Macario A. Sagun Jr. ( Mackie Sagun ) known to many as “Sir Mackie,” is well-known for being frank, straightforward, and strict. He does not always sugarcoat his words. He is a firm believer in real talk, and there are moments when his honesty may come across as rather blunt, especially to students.
But those who truly know him understand that his words are rarely meant to tear people down. More often, they are meant to wake people up, correct what needs to be corrected, and push them toward becoming better versions of themselves. He speaks with the future in mind because he believes in the potential of every learner.
He teaches with passion and takes his work seriously. For him, teaching is not merely about delivering lessons - it is about instilling discipline, responsibility, accountability, and respect for the things that truly matter.
And, of course, many people know that he has little to no patience for those who take his teachings, their responsibilities, or important matters in life for granted!
So, better take his teachings seriously - and apply what you learn from him! You never know when you might meet him somewhere down the road. You certainly would not want Sir Mackie to catch you doing something you know you should not be doing, whether in your studies or in life!
Yet there is a certain wisdom in knowing how to deal with him: listen when he speaks, respect his standards, and never take his teachings or his trust lightly. Stay on the right side of Sir Mackie, and you will eventually discover that the “dragon” behind the intimidating aura is not quite as terrifying as he first appears.
Beneath the tough exterior is a man who is fair, trustworthy, enthusiastic, compassionate, and surprisingly easy to get along with.
Perhaps one of the most important lessons Sir Mackie has imparted after more than twenty years of service is not found in any textbook or lesson plan. It is found in the standards he refuses to compromise.
He reminds us that caring for learners does not always mean making things easier for them. Sometimes, genuine care means challenging them, correcting them, demanding more from them, and refusing to lower the standards simply because the journey is difficult.
Sir Mackie, Teacher, ikaw naman!
We thank you for being the teacher that you are - a teacher who refuses to lower his standards just to make things easier, but instead challenges others to elevate themselves and rise to those standards.
If others lower the standards to meet certain levels, you inspire others to raise themselves to meet the standards you believe they are capable of reaching.
And perhaps that is the kind of teacher we need:
stern in standards, firm in principles, honest in words, passionate in teaching, and genuine at heart.
Thank you, Sir Mackie, for reminding us that sometimes, the toughest teachers are the ones who care enough to demand our best.
