Welcome to the Lower School Department
Lower School offers students in grades 1-4 (age 6 - 10) a challenging, developmentally appropriate academic programme. The programme includes daily lessons in English (reading, writing, handwriting and spelling), humanities (geography and history) and mathematics taught by the subject teacher. Homeroom teachers work collaboratively with special subject teachers in science, TLE, library, music, art, and physical education to create integrated lessons that increase knowledge of a topic while stimulating learning. This integrated curriculum encourages students to develop creativity and problem-solving abilities while emphasizing analytic, reasoning, and thinking skills. We believe that learning should be an active process that allows children to grow in personal understanding and expand their knowledge of other people, places, and events. We teach and encourage children to express opinions, develop their decision-making capabilities, take appropriate risks and work collaboratively. We develop hearts and minds that respect cultural differences and different points of view. Our students engage in planned interdisciplinary and multicultural learning, both in and out of the classroom. We aim to have all students become confident and successful lifelong learners, able to read, write, and apply and integrate the principles of mathematics and science. The Lower School experience at Brentwood a delivers a meaningful and exciting journey for all of our young children.
