Why do so many autism families stop going to church? ๐
I don't think it's because they've lost their faith.
For some families, church becomes overwhelming. Their child struggles to sit through a long service, the music is too loud, or the environment is simply too much. Some parents spend the entire service outside with their child instead of being able to worship.
For others, it's the fear of being stared at or judged when their child makes noises, moves around, or doesn't behave the way people expect. And then there's something many autism parents can relate to. As soon as people hear "autism," the first response is often, "Let's pray it away."
Please don't misunderstand me. I believe in prayer, and I appreciate every sincere prayer for my family
Instead of asking why autism families aren't coming to church, maybe we should ask how we can make church a place where they feel understood, supported, and welcome.
Have you ever stopped going to church because of your child's autism? If so, what made you stop? And what would help you feel comfortable going back?
I'd love to hear your experiences๐
