Roundtable Discussion on the proposed Reframed GEC in Philippine Higher Education
Our VP for Academics and Administration, Asst. Prof. Gene Kervin Borja, participated in the roundtable discussion on the proposed Reframed General Education Curriculum (GEC), joining fellow educators in a substantive dialogue on the future direction of GEC in Philippine higher education.
In his intervention, Asst. Prof. Borja underscored the importance of ensuring that curriculum reform remains anchored on the fundamental purpose of General Education: developing graduates who are intellectually capable, ethically grounded, culturally aware, and responsive to the needs of society.
He emphasized that curricular reform should not be viewed merely as an exercise in reducing courses or reorganizing academic content. Rather, it should serve as an opportunity to deepen learning, strengthen critical thinking, and ensure that students develop the intellectual competencies necessary to navigate an increasingly complex and rapidly changing world.
He further stressed that the proposed GEC framework should maintain academic rigor while remaining relevant to the Filipino context. For him, meaningful curriculum reform is ultimately measured not by how much content is removed, but by how effectively higher education prepares students to think critically, engage responsibly, and contribute meaningfully to society.
His participation reflected the continuing commitment of the academic community to engage constructively in discussions that shape the quality, relevance, and future of Philippine higher education.
