There is something embarrassing about the memories we refuse to accept as grief.

Moments in your life start to get oddly familiar. A snack in the grocery shelf. The lighting of a specific street, or maybe even a nickname that had once meant everything, before it became ordinary.

Strange how the body keeps ways and habits the mind has already abandoned long ago.

โ€œI donโ€™t care who youโ€™re with or where on earth you have beenโ€

Though it may seem like avoidance, there is a quiet weight of emotion hidden beneath the surface of this line.

Memories are the only footprints left behind by those who once shaped our world, lingering long after the people themselves have gone.

โ€œPerpetually devoted to what we had.โ€

There is no requirement that the โ€œweโ€ be romantic. It can be a barkada, a classroom, a neighborhood, a family dinner that used to happen every Sunday, even a younger self who believed certain things would last forever.

What hurts is not necessarily the loss in the end.

It is discovering that in the beginning, you were living through something you would eventually beg your own memory to keep.

Memory has quite a strange sense of proportion.

It manages to forget the important conversations, where you put your keys and yet, it can still preserve the exact way someone used to laugh when you crack a joke, the feeling of skin against skin when your hands intertwine and the way someoneโ€™s hair glowed beneath the golden rays.

And perhaps that is the confession hiding underneath all this nostalgia:

We do not always want the past returned.

Sometimes we just want proof that, once upon a time, it was ours.

And that is the peculiar cruelty of memory.

Teachersโ€™ Day is once again a time to honor educators for shaping the minds of the next generation, but behind the celebrations are teachers working beyond classroom hours, handling administrative duties, and taking on additional responsibilities. This reality becomes more apparent with EDCOM II reporting that non-teaching clerical work can consume up to two-thirds of teachersโ€™ non-instructional time. Appreciation alone is not enough when educators are given more work without enough time, resources, or support.

Teachers are expected to educate, assess, prepare lessons, submit reports, manage classrooms, and take on additional programs all while ensuring that students continue to learn. Instead of having their workload reduced, many educators are being given even more responsibilities without corresponding compensation.

Moreover, according to the Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT), many educators continue to work extended hours to complete lesson preparation, assessments, school reports, and ARAL-related tasks. The implementation of the ARAL Program, for instance, has added responsibilities to teachers who were already struggling with existing demands.

Further, this is not simply just a matter of teachers having too much work. Research by the Second Congressional Commission on Education (EDCOM II) found that non-teaching clerical duties can consume up to two-thirds of teachersโ€™ non-instructional time, pushing many to work beyond standard hours without additional pay. Time that should be spent resting is instead consumed by paperworks.

In addition, the problem becomes heavier when resources are lacking, with 52% of 1,200 Filipinos in a Pulse Asia survey identifying the lack of classrooms as the top issue DepEd should immediately address, followed by insufficient learning resources at 49% and lack of teachers at 45%. These shortages leave teachers working in overcrowded classrooms with limited books, computers, and other materials, sometimes forcing them to spend their own money to keep their classrooms functional.

As the cost of living continues to rise due to inflation, the Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) has called for higher teacher salaries to help educators keep up with increasing expenses. Teachers deserve compensation that allows them to live with dignity, not merely survive the demands of their profession.

Some may argue that additional programs and responsibilities are necessary to address the countryโ€™s learning crisis, and teachers, as educationโ€™s frontliners, have an important role in making these reforms work. That is undeniably true, however, this should not come at the expense of teachersโ€™ well-being, especially when they are already burdened with excessive workloads and limited resources.

This Teachersโ€™ Day, appreciation must go beyond flowers, greeting cards, and social media posts. Gratitude means recognizing the conditions teachers work under and demanding the support necessary for them to do their jobs without sacrificing their time, resources, and well-being. While students cannot solve the larger problems in the education system alone, they can help lessen their teachersโ€™ burden by being responsible learners and treating educators with the respect they deserve.

Ultimately, teachers should not have to carry excess baggage simply because the education system has nowhere else to put it. The Department of Education and policymakers must prioritize fair compensation, adequate staffing, sufficient learning resources, and realistic workloads to ensure that reforms do not deepen the burden on educators. Teachers carry and give more than just lessons, they give their time, energy, patience, and sometimes parts of themselves.

Now more than ever, the system must give them the support they need to continue giving lessons that can help the future of the next generations.

Itโ€™s not fair. It really isnโ€™t. And maybe that sounds melodramatic to some, but how else are young journalists supposed to feel when theyโ€™re handed a full plate of false hope, with an insensitive โ€œapologyโ€ served as a bland side dish? Although a memorandum has yet to be released, strong speculation has circulated that while a "Top 5" rule was initially understood, only the Top 3 will actually advance to the Regional Schools Press Conference (RSPC). If true, it means students who trained endlessly, sacrificed sleep, and poured everything into earning those outer spots have had their achievements erased overnight.

When so much is expected from student journalists, shouldnโ€™t they be allowed to expect the same level of responsibility from the people who set those expectations? And yes, I might sound offensive, but what exactly are we supposed to call it when students are made to believe they have finally earned their place at the RSPC, only to have that opportunity taken back weeks later and brushed off as an โ€œinnocentโ€ mistake? A mistake that could have been avoided. A mistake that affected the hopes, preparations, and efforts of students who took that error seriously.

On September 26, a few journalism advocates and judges started posting on Facebook that only the Top 3 would qualify for the RSPCโ€”despite the earlier announcement of Top 5. And just like that, the finish line moved. Students who had trained believing there were five spots suddenly found out there were only three. Was the original announcement really that difficult to get right?

For the journalists affected, this was more than losing two slots. Some had already celebrated, told their families, and believed their hard work had finally paid off. So isnโ€™t it heartbreaking when these same journalists are forced to tell their families and friends that they didnโ€™t get in?

And the most ironic part? Student journalists are taught to be accurate, responsible, and accountable because words have consequences. Apparently, that lesson does not apply to announcements. Behind every โ€œTop 5โ€ is a student who worked for that spotโ€”someone who felt that they finally got to live a dream they had fought so hard for.

Many may argue that it was an honest mistake, something that hurt the organizers themselves, and maybe it did. Maybe it kept them up at night and made them feel a bit guilty. But double all of that, and thatโ€™s how much those journalists who were misled into thinking they had won feel. I donโ€™t want to understand something that could have been purely avoided because, at this point, itโ€™s ignorance.

The Department of Education (DepEd) needs to take greater responsibility and improve coordination in all of its eventsโ€”not only in journalism, but in every competition it holds where hundreds of young minds place their sacrifices, efforts, and hopes. Because if they had the time to move to an entirely different curriculum, then theyโ€™d also have more than enough time to get their act together.

We, as young student journalists, have the right to speak up. I mean, thatโ€™s what weโ€™re supposed to do, so we shouldnโ€™t feel embarrassed to do so. And to all those who are disappointed or let downโ€”at themselves or at DepEd itselfโ€”just know that you are one of the best journalists the Philippines could ever offer, because in the end, WE ARE ALL MORE THAN A NUMBER.

What happens when the education we were promised as our ticket to a better life starts feeling like another gamble? But hereโ€™s the pill that people cannot swallowโ€”working hard, earning a degree, and doing everything โ€œrightโ€ still does not guarantee a future where Filipinos can actually afford to stay and thrive in their own country.

The Philippines continues to face rising living costs, with the source citing inflation affecting food, transportation, housing, and other basic needs, while many families struggle to maintain financial security. For students, this means education is no longer happening in a vacuum; behind every tuition payment, school project, and allowance is a family trying to keep up with a life that keeps getting more expensive.

As a matter of fact, this also points to migration, with Filipinos leaving the country for employment, professional advancement, education, and better opportunities. When young people start seeing graduation as preparation for leaving rather than building a life here, education becomes more than a pathway to successโ€”it becomes a possible exit plan.

Furthermore, it points to how people can become disillusioned when their experiences repeatedly contradict their expectations, eventually losing trust in institutions and promises of change. That is especially worrying for students because what we learn in classrooms should build not only knowledge, but also the confidence that there is a place for our knowledge in the society we are preparing to enter.

I believe that education should not be reduced to a piece of paper that qualifies someone to search for opportunities somewhere else, because students deserve to imagine a future where their skills can also matter at home. If studying hard only teaches young Filipinos how to survive, compete, and eventually leave, then we have to ask whether we are preparing students for a futureโ€”or simply preparing them to escape the present.

Of course, leaving the country is not automatically a failure of Philippine education, since overseas work can provide better opportunities and financial support for Filipino families. But when leaving becomes the expectation rather than simply one option among many, it reveals a deeper problem: education may be opening doors, while the country struggles to provide enough reasons for graduates to walk through them here.

Schools and institutions should strengthen career preparation, practical skills, research, and opportunities that allow students to connect what they learn with real problems in their communities. Moreover, education should not only teach students how to qualify for jobs; it should help create learners who can build opportunities, solve problems, and see themselves as contributors to the country they studied so hard to serve.

Students should keep dreaming beyond graduation, but we should also question why so many of those dreams seem to require leaving home to become possible. Because at the end of the day, education should give Filipinos a reason to believe in their futureโ€”not just enough credentials to find one somewhere else.
