CHECK THIS OUT: As we continue to ensure that all the implementation of ongoing projects operate under maximum and sufficient utilization of resources, the Inland Aquatic Resources Research Division resumed its Monitoring & Evaluation and Laboratory Visit at the Mindanao State University - Naawan.

The laboratories of the following projects were visited:

👀 Utilization of Fruit Processing Waste as a Source of Prebiotics and Immunostimulants for the Development of Healthy and Improved Aquaculture Feeds by Dr. Fiona L. Pedroso

👀 Production of all-male and fast-growing progeny using phytoandrogen for sustainable seedstock of giant freshwater prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii (De Man, 1879) by Dr. Dan M. Arriesgado

December 6, 2023| Researchers of Mindanao State University at Naawan, under the DOST-PCCARRD-funded project "Giant Freshwater Prawn Technology Project," visited one of its selected areas in Mindanao. The research team, spearheaded by Dr. Dan M. Arriesgado, the project leader of this study, conducted a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) with the local gatherers, collectors, and buyers of Ulang/Paje from Balas, Aurora, Zamboanga del Sur to understand and characterize the stakeholders and beneficiaries of the Ulang industry in Mindanao. The activity allowed the team to identify a viable location for the occurrence and possible collection of Macrobrachium broodstock to be transported back to MSU-Naawan.

The team was facilitated by the Municipal Agriculture Office of the Municipality of Aurora, Ms. Kathleen Tamayo and Ms. Jinky Jayme , and the Barangay Captain of Balas, Aurora, Zamboanga del Sur, Mr. Richard Bravo who helped the team conduct the activity successfully.

Present in the said activity were the project faculty members, namely Assistant Professor Roseller G. Sabilla and Mr. Jomar F. Besoña. It has also been joined by mentees from the faculty members of the School of Marine Fisheries and Technology (SMFT), Ms. Raisa Marie Bacasnot and Ms. Noeme Fabiosa-Baldevieso, the BS Fisheries students (conducting their thesis related to the project) and by the two research assistants, Hilbert Cañada and John Lloyd Subsuban who one way or another helped facilitate the activity to acquire data and achieve the project objective as a whole.

The Mindanao State University at Naawan (MSUN) is implementing a project titled “Production of All-Male and Fast-growing Progeny Using Phytoadrogen for Sustainable Seedstock of Giant Freshwater Prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii (De Man, 1879) in Mindanao” under the main funding support of DOST-PCAARRD. The project will delve into establishing a breeding nucleus of the Giant Freshwater Prawn, locally known as ulang/pahe, in the hatchery from the different populations in the riverine systems in Mindanao for sustainable seed production.
The project aims to understand the genetic makeup of M. rosenbergii in Mindanao and identify the best ways to produce genetically diverse and fast-growing seeds. It will also explore the use of hormones to create fast-growing all-male progeny.
