IELTS WRITING TASK 2

Some people believe that the government should take responsibility for controlling pollution because it causes serious health problems. To what extent does pollution affect our health? Do you agree or disagree that the government should be responsible?

======================================
SAMPLE ANSWER

It is often argued that the government should take responsibility for controlling pollution because of its negative impact on public health. I strongly agree with this view, as pollution plays a significant role in causing health problems, and governments are best placed to address it.

Pollution affects human health in many ways. Air pollution, caused by vehicle emissions and industrial activities, can lead to respiratory problems such as asthma, bronchitis, and even lung cancer. Water pollution, resulting from untreated waste and chemicals, can spread infectious diseases and harm communities that rely on contaminated water. In addition, exposure to polluted environments can weaken the immune system and increase the risk of chronic illnesses. Clearly, pollution is a major factor that directly threatens human health.

I believe the government should take primary responsibility for controlling pollution. Governments can create and enforce laws to limit emissions, regulate industries, and invest in clean energy and public transportation. Without such measures, individuals and private companies may lack the incentive to act responsibly. While citizens also have a role to play, such as reducing waste and conserving energy, effective government policies are crucial to protect public health on a large scale.

In conclusion, pollution significantly affects human health, and I strongly agree that the government must take the lead in controlling it. Only through combined efforts and strong policies can society reduce health risks and ensure a cleaner environment.

ESSAY FOR IELTS : CEOs and company presidents are earning more than their employees. Up to what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement.

In many companies today, chief executive officers and company presidents earn significantly higher salaries than their employees. While some people view this gap as unfair, I largely agree that senior executives are justified in earning more, although the difference should not be excessive.

To begin with, CEOs carry an enormous level of responsibility. They make critical decisions that directly affect a company’s performance, reputation, and long-term survival. A single poor decision can result in financial losses or even job cuts for thousands of employees. Because of this high level of accountability, offering higher salaries is a way to attract experienced leaders who can successfully manage complex organizations in competitive markets.

In addition, senior executives are often expected to work long hours under constant pressure. They are responsible for strategic planning, dealing with investors, and responding to crises, all of which require exceptional skills and experience. As such, higher pay can be seen as compensation for the intense workload and stress associated with these roles.

However, when the income gap becomes too wide, it can negatively affect employee morale. Workers who feel underpaid may become less motivated and less loyal to the company, which can reduce productivity. For example, companies with extreme pay disparities often face public criticism and higher staff turnover. This suggests that while higher executive pay is reasonable, it should be balanced with fair wages and benefits for employees.

In conclusion, I agree to a large extent that CEOs and company presidents should earn more than their employees due to their responsibilities and expertise. Nevertheless, companies should ensure that the pay gap remains reasonable in order to maintain motivation, fairness, and long-term success.

IELTS WRITING TASK 2
250 WORDS
40 MINS

In Britain, when someone gets old they often go to live in a home with other old people where there are nurses to look after them. Sometimes the government has to pay for this care.

Who do you think should pay for this care, the government or the family?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
===================================

SAMPLE ANSWER:
In the United Kingdom, it is common for elderly people to move into residential care homes where professional nurses provide round-the-clock support. As the population ages, the question of who should bear the financial responsibility for such care—whether the government or the family—has become increasingly important. In my view, while families should contribute where possible, the government must take primary responsibility for funding elderly care.

To begin with, the government is better positioned to ensure equal and consistent care for all senior citizens. Many elderly individuals have spent decades paying taxes and contributing to society; therefore, it is reasonable that the state supports them when they are no longer able to live independently. If funding were left solely to families, access to quality care would depend heavily on income levels, creating inequality among the elderly. For instance, low-income families may struggle to afford nursing homes, forcing older relatives into inadequate or unsafe living conditions.

Furthermore, relying entirely on families places an unfair emotional and financial burden on them. Modern families often face demanding work schedules, rising living costs, and limited housing space, making full-time elderly care impractical. Even when families are willing to help, they may lack the medical skills required to manage age-related illnesses such as dementia or mobility impairments. Professional care homes, supported by government funding, are better equipped to provide specialized and dignified care.

That said, families should not be excluded from responsibility altogether. Adult children can contribute financially if they are able, or provide emotional support and regular visits to maintain strong family bonds. In some cases, shared funding between families and the government can reduce pressure on public resources while still guaranteeing a high standard of care. This cooperative approach encourages responsibility without placing excessive strain on any one party.

In conclusion, although families play an important supportive role, the government should bear the main responsibility for paying for elderly care. This ensures fairness, protects vulnerable citizens, and acknowledges the lifelong contributions of older people to society. A balanced system, where families assist according to their means, offers the most sustainable and compassionate solution.
