Today’s Korean Grammar : ~(으)면 안 되다

This grammar is attached with verbs and expresses the prohibition or limitation of a particular action of the listener. It also can represent social conventions or common sense dictating that a behavior or state is prohibited or not tolerated.

It corresponds to ‘may not’ or ‘not allowed to’ in English.

📌 How to use :
Verb Stem + (으)면 안 되다

----------------------------------

If the stem ends with a consonant, use ~으면 안 되다

[걷다 - To walk]
걷다 → 걷
걷 + ~으면 안 되다 → 걸으면 안 되다

----------------------------------

If the stem ends with a vowel, use ~면 안 되다

[쉬다 - To rest]
쉬다 → 쉬
쉬 + ~면 안 되다 → 쉬면 안 되다

----------------------------------

It can be used in the double negative form, that is, ~지 않으면 안 되다 to emphasize that a particular behavior must be performed.

• 8월은 휴가철이니까 비행기 표를 미리 사지 않으면 안 돼요.
= 표를 미리 사야 돼요.

Examples :
• 실내에서 담배를 피우면 안 돼요.
- Smoking indoors is not allowed.

• 집 안에서 신발을 신으면 안 돼요.
- You can not wear shoes inside the house.

Today’s Korean Grammar : ~아/어도 되다

This grammar is attached with verbs used to grant, approve or allow an action indicated by the preceding verb. It conveys the meaning that performing an action is ‘okay’, ‘not a problem’, or ‘good to do’.

📌 How to use :
Verb Stem + 아/어도 되다

----------------------------------

~아도 되다 is used when the word stem ends in ㅏ or ㅗ.

[가다 - to go]
가다 → 가
가 + 아도 되다 → 가도 되다

[팔다 - to sell]
팔다 → 팔
팔 + 아도 되다 → 팔아도 되다

----------------------------------

~어도 되다 is used when the word stem ends in other vowel except ㅏ or ㅗ.

[읽다 - to read]
읽다 → 읽
읽 + 어도 되다 → 읽어도 되다

[배우다 - to learn]
배우다 → 배우
배우 + 어도 되다 → 배워도 되다

~해도 되다 is used when the word stem ends in 하다.

[청소하다 - to clean]

[산책하다 - to walk or stroll]
