Last Monday, December 1, the Senior High School department had the honor of welcoming esteemed guest speaker Mayor Vico Sotto to talk in a panel centered around the topic of integrity-based credibility in public service and governance. The panel, serving as a culminating activity for the Grade 11 students on Contemporary Philippine Arts from the Regions, Creative Writing, Oral Communication, and Komunikasyon at Pananaliksik, allowed the students to submit questions inquiring about his experiences and insights in executing good governance in his office in Pasig. Here, Mayor Vico Sotto shared his wisdom on the importance of strengthening institutions, surrounding oneself with a like-minded community, and committing oneself to making good decisions everyday in the face of corruption. He highlighted the intersection, addressing the issue of corruption at the root by building better foundations from which governance can rise up, whether this be by establishing longer lasting institutions, choosing right-minded people to be influenced by, or taking it upon yourself to make the small decisions that contribute to the greater good of the Philippine governance system. Though the current status of the Philippine government may seem disheartening, Mayor Vico Sotto encourages us to remain grounded in our core belief because it is these virtues that will allow us to acknowledge and actively maintain our role as catalysts of progress.
