We're Off to See the Wizard!
Do you want to be Dorothy, a witch, a wizard, a Scarecrow, a Tin Man, or a Lion? On August 24 and 25, we will come to school dressed-up as one of the characters from the Wizard of Oz story. We will use a map to figure out how to get to the Emerald City and meet the wizard. Dorothy often rode the cowardly lion. We will ask the children what else they can ride to get to a destination. We will make a Yellow Brick Road of paper for our classroom floor and count how many bricks would it take to make our yellow brick road across the art room or the playground. We will also decorate our paper bricks with crayons! Gemstones are common in Oz, from rubies to emeralds. We will practice sorting different gem toys and describe their shapes and sizes. We will also make a city of emeralds using crystal climbers and magnetic tiles. In studying characterization, we will talk about which characters have a good behavior and which ones have a bad behavior. How did each character show wisdom, love, and courage before they were rewarded by the Wizard?

What to wear: Wizard of Oz character – Any outfit or accessory to celebrate the Wizard of Oz day!

It’s “Play in the Sand Day” on August 10 and 11. It does not matter where you play in the sand – whether on the beach, in the sand pit or at 4C! Even adults may dig in the sand on this day. Children will discover the sand’s properties like its texture and color. The regular sand is composed of finely divided rock and mineral particles. But at 4C, we will get the chance to make sand art using kinetic sand! The two basic building ingredients of sand and water are available in abundance only at a sandy beach, so most sand play takes place there, or in a sandpit. Thanks to new technology, kinetic sand mimics the physical properties of wet sand. Children can do sand art, a practice of modeling sand into an artistic form, such as a sand brushing, sand sculpture, or making mud pies. We’ll definitely have fun building sandcastles and digging holes!

What to bring on Wednesday and Thursday? Your favorite sand toy or accessories for “Show and Tell”

Children's Author's Day: Beatrix Potter's Birthday
Beatrix is a renowned children's author and illustrator of “The Tale of Peter Rabbit.” She had experienced difficulty finding a publisher, having sent the manuscript to six publishers, and receiving six rejections. However, the book was eventually accepted by the London firm of Frederick Warne & Co. It was an instant success and Beatrix went on to produce a total of twenty-three “little Tales”, all published by Warne in 1902. Her story will help inspire children to believe in themselves and keep trying when things didn’t go their way. On July 27 and 28, we will celebrate this event by creating our own book about challenging tasks, making good choices, and what can we do to accomplish them. This event is also fitting to the letter of the week (letter H), as we will tie in the word “hare,” and study the world of rabbits and hares. We will read different books to understand the difference between rabbits and hares and by playing folder games. We will also represent hares by using the upper case H.

What to bring on Wednesday and Thursday? Rabbit stuffed toy or Rabbit book

Celebrate First Moon Landing at 4C!
On 20th July 1969, NASA met President Kennedy's challenge to put a man on the moon. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first and second men to walk on the moon. They explored the moon's surface and collected 22 kilograms of rocks for study back on earth. When they returned to earth they were welcomed as celebrities, and international heroes! At 4C, we will conduct activities for young children to identify what is in space and learn about what an astronaut and astronomer do. For science experiment, we will learn about air pressure and rocket thrust. We will use a balloon to store energy and generate thrust for the rocket. We will also assemble a space craft using smart cubes to improve fine motor and problem solving skills. For sensory art, we will explore different rocks and make moon craters in a dish of flour with pebbles and marbles. It would be a messy yet another fun day at 4C!

What to bring on Wednesday and Thursday? Rocket ship toy or book about the moon

National French Fry Day!
Each year on July 13, thousands of people will participate in the celebration of National French Fry Day by enjoying one of the many varieties of the classic French fry. It is believed by some that the term “French” was introduced to the potatoes when the American soldiers arrived in Belgium during World War I and consequently tasted Belgian fries. It is suggested that they called them “French” as it was the official language of the Belgian Army at that time. Sometimes the fries are made from sweet potatoes, some are baked instead of fried or are cut up into unusual shapes such as curly fries, waffles fries, crinkle cut fries or tornado fries. To celebrate National French Fry Day, we will pretend cooking and selling fries in the kitchen area. We will use play dough to create different kinds, sizes and shapes of fries and have them seasoned, cut and shaped how we like them. We will also peel and cut up different kinds of potato and describe its characteristics.

What to bring on Wednesday and Thursday? A raw potato (sweet potato, russet, white, or yellow; small or large ones)

When Teddy Comes to School!
Come and celebrate with us on Friday, June 8th. Bring your special teddy bear, dress him/her up (clothes and accessories), and set off for a Teddy Bear Picnic Day. We will paint bear paws on our cheeks to start the day. We will have the children make a picnic basket for their bear. Bears love honey and other sweet things so we will fill the picnic baskets with these kinds of food. We will play games and win a prize for the smallest or tallest teddy bear, best-dressed bear, and best-named bear. We will have our teddy bears jump in the parachute and have the kids act out like bears or play “look out for the bear” in the playground. For art, we will paint a paper clay bear. It’s also a perfect time to hold our own bear while listening to a story. It’s one memory-making day you don’t want to miss. See you at the Station!
