July 1, 2026 | Our Department of Textile and Garment Technology had the opportunity to attend the official launch of ONWARD: Philippine Nonwoven Textile Innovation by the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST - PTRI) held at The Annex - Atrium SM North EDSA.
The event highlighted that the future of Philippine textiles extends far beyond clothing, garments, and apparel. While our country is rich in natural fibers traditionally used for knitted and woven fabrics, this initiative demonstrates how these same resources can be transformed into innovative nonwoven textiles with applications in hygiene, mobility, housing, agriculture, healthcare, and many other industries. It marks a significant step toward sustainable manufacturing, science-driven innovation, and the development of globally competitive, high-value products proudly made from Philippine natural fibers.
This initiative not only showcases the richness of the Philippines natural resources but also empowers local communities while promoting environmental sustainability and economic growth. By transforming natural fibers into innovative products, it creates opportunities for sustainable livelihoods, supports local industries, and delivers durable, high-value solutions that benefit both people and the environment.
Being part of this event was truly meaningful, especially for our Department. It reminded us that textile education goes beyond fashion, design, and creativity, it also embraces science, research, technology, and sustainability. As future professionals in the textile and garment industry, we are encouraged to continue learning, remain adaptable, and explore how innovation can shape a more sustainable, resilient, and globally competitive Philippine textile sector.
