Dr. Ravelina R. Velasco, Vice President for Academic Affairs of Central Luzon State University (CLSU) and the newly designated Director of the King Sejong Institute Muñoz, CLSU, represented the university at the prestigious World Korean Educator Conference 2025 held at The Shilla Seoul, South Korea. The conference, organized by the King Sejong Institute Foundation (KSIF), brought together language education leaders and representatives from newly designated King Sejong Institutes (KSIs) worldwide.

With the theme “Korean Language Reaching the World, Educators Opening the Future,” the three-day conference featured formal ceremonies, keynote sessions, and immersive cultural experiences, underscoring the growing global reach of the Korean language and culture.

On July 21, Dr. Velasco—the lone Filipino delegate in the ceremony—took part in the official Designation Ceremony for 2025 Newly Designated King Sejong Institutes, marking a significant milestone as CLSU joins the global KSI network. The day’s program included welcome messages, an awards ceremony for outstanding KSIs, and a keynote address titled “Literacy and Korean Language Education in the Age of AI.” Dr. Velasco also participated in a roundtable session where new and outstanding KSI representatives shared best practices and insights on Korean language education.

To ensure smooth communication and engagement throughout the program, Korean-English liaison interpreters were assigned to each non-Korean speaking delegate, including Dr. Velasco.

Dr. Velasco’s attendance affirms CLSU’s strengthened commitment to global academic exchange, cultural diplomacy, and multilingual education through the newly established King Sejong Institute at CLSU, set to formally open in August 2025. This was made possible through CLSU’s strong academic partnership with Sunchon National University (SCNU) in South Korea.

The university extends its gratitude to the KSIF and partner institution SCNU for the opportunity to be part of this global initiative that celebrates education, culture, and connection.

The Korean Cultural Class officially commenced its first session, marking the start of the cultural enrichment program that will run from July 27 to August 30. The series aims to provide participants with a deeper appreciation of Korean history, traditions, and culture through engaging discussions and interactive activities.

The opening session introduced participants to the history and significance of the Taegeukgi (Korean National Flag), highlighting its symbolism and its connection to Korea’s independence and national identity. The discussion provided valuable insights into the country’s rich historical and cultural heritage.

To reinforce the lesson, participants took part in a hands-on “Making the Taegeukgi” activity, where they created their own Korean flags using colorful beads. The creative workshop encouraged participants to apply what they had learned while enjoying a fun and collaborative cultural experience.

Throughout the duration of the program, participants can look forward to a variety of exciting sessions featuring DIY Korean arts and crafts, traditional Korean games, cultural workshops, and other interactive activities designed to promote a greater understanding and appreciation of Korean culture.

SUNCHEON, SOUTH KOREA — Students from the King Sejong Institute (KSI) Muñoz continued their cultural and academic journey on Day 3 of the 2026 Korean Studies Summer Program at Sunchon National University (SNU), participating in activities that highlighted Korean education, campus life, and language learning.

The day began with breakfast at the university dormitory, followed by a guided orientation of the student residence, giving participants a closer look at the living environment of Korean university students.

One of the day’s highlights was attending the Completion Ceremony of the Korean Language Institute, where KSI Muñoz students joined participants from different countries in witnessing the graduation rites of Korean language learners. The ceremony featured congratulatory messages, cultural performances, student club presentations, and an awards ceremony, showcasing the achievements and vibrant campus culture of Sunchon National University.

Following lunch at Daesupgol Farm, the participants attended an interactive Korean language class, where they practiced essential Korean greetings and self-introductions to build confidence in everyday communication. As part of the cultural learning session, the students also created their own norigae (노리개)—a traditional Korean ornamental accessory symbolizing good fortune, prosperity, and cultural heritage. The hands-on activity allowed the participants to appreciate Korean craftsmanship while learning about the cultural significance of one of Korea’s most recognizable traditional accessories.

The day’s activities provided participants with valuable insights into Korean academic life while enhancing their language proficiency, cultural appreciation, and intercultural competence—key objectives of the Korean Studies Summer Program.

Through experiences such as these, KSI Muñoz continues to provide its students with meaningful international learning opportunities that foster global citizenship, cultural appreciation, and stronger ties with partner institutions in the Republic of Korea.
