The Department of Biological Sciences, College of Science-CLSU successfully hosted a thought-provoking DOST Balik Scientist Lecture featuring Dr. Andrian “Adi” P. Gajigan, Cornell Atkinson Postdoctoral Fellow and DOST-PCAARRD Balik Scientist from UP Marine Science Institute.

Dr. Gajigan shared his pioneering work on low-cost imaging systems (PlanktoScope) and algae-associated viruses, offering innovative approaches to monitor and mitigate harmful algal blooms—an issue critical to aquatic health and sustainability.

The event was attended by Dr. Angeles M. De Leon (Dean of the College of Science), Dr. Garry A. Benico (Head of ADB laboratory) Dr. Mary Jhane M. Valentino (Chair of the Department of Biological Sciences) faculty members, students, and researchers.

ADVISORY | Shift to Asynchronous Classes on August 11

As the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat) continues to affect our students and community, classes remain under an asynchronous setup on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, as per the directive of University President Dr. Evaristo A. Abella.

Meanwhile, offices shall remain open and fully operational to continue serving the community, unless otherwise announced. Any subsequent updates or changes will be communicated through an official advisory from the PLGU/LGU Disaster Risk Reduction Council.

Everyone is expected to remain alert for water accumulation and possible changes in rainfall conditions.

The ADB Lab of Central Luzon State University proudly congratulates 𝐃𝐫. 𝐆𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐲 𝐀. 𝐁𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐨 Professor of the Department of Biological Sciences, for his contribution as a co-author to a newly published research article in Harmful Algae, a prestigious Q1 international journal specializing in harmful microalgae and harmful algal blooms.

The study investigates the intricate cellular structures of Azadinium and Amphidoma, microscopic marine dinoflagellates that include both toxin-producing and non-toxin-producing species. Using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), the researchers examined these organisms at the cellular level, providing valuable insights for species identification, taxonomy, and understanding the biology of harmful microalgae.

The publication is also Open Access, allowing the research to be freely accessible to the scientific community worldwide. The substantial Open Access publication cost of ¥𝟓𝟒𝟓,𝟔𝟕𝟎 (𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐱𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐔𝐒$𝟑,𝟒𝟓𝟎) was generously supported by the University of Tokyo.
