MYKOUPDATE | Day 1 (August 17, 2026)

The first day of the Intensive Training on Mushroom Pharming kicked off with insightful lectures on the Introduction to Mushroom Pharming by Dr. Rich Milton Dulay and Mushroom Pure Culture and Spawn Production by Dr. Sofronio Kalaw. Participants also took part in hands-on laboratory exercises on culture media preparation, grain spawn preparation, sterilization, and tissue culture of Pleurotus florida. These practical sessions were facilitated by Ms. Kristine Grace Waing, Mx. Rabbie Daniel Elas, Ms. Kathlene Claire Ganareal, Mr. Eduard Manzano, Mr. Kenneth Rivera, and PUP BS Biology Interns.

Philippine Mushroom of the Week: Chlorophyllum molybdites

Be careful what you eat, as it may cause you trouble in the cr! 🚽🀒☠️ Meet Chlorophyllum molybdites, commonly known as the green-spored parasol or false parasol. This poisonous mushroom belongs to the family Agaricaceae and commonly grows on lawns and grassy fields. It is widely distributed in tropical and subtropical regions. C. molybdites is characterized by its large, whitish cap, prominent scales, and gills that develop a greenish coloration as the mushroom matures, ready for spores disperal. When ingested, it can cause potentially severe gastrointestinal symptoms, including vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain, which typically occur within 1–3 hours after consumption.

One of the major concerns surrounding C. molybdites is its close resemblance to the edible Chlorophyllum rhacodes, making misidentification a common cause of mushroom poisoning. Although C. molybdites is generally not considered fatally poisonous, its consumption can result in intense gastrointestinal distress and may require medical attention. Proper identification is therefore essential, especially because this common mushroom can easily be mistaken for an edible species.

Species Listing of Macrofungi in Brgy. Zabali, Baler, Aurora, Philippines

Highlights of the Study:

The study documented the diversity and occurrence of macrofungi in the ultramafic forests of Brgy. Zabali, Baler, Aurora, a recognized Key Biodiversity Area in the Philippines, during the transition toward the southwest monsoon season. Using opportunistic sampling across three collection periods from May to July 2025, a total of 105 specimens representing 1 class, 8 orders, 24 families, 39 genera, and 52 species were recorded, with Polyporaceae having the highest species richness. The findings showed that macrofungal composition was strongly influenced by precipitation, with polyporoid fungi dominating during drier periods and fleshy fungi becoming more prevalent following increased rainfall. Notably, only 19 species were identified to species level, while seven basidiomycetes were reported as new records for the Philippines: Calocera sp., Laetiporus sp., Marasmius cf. cladophyllus, Panus cf. similis, Phaeotremella sp., Phylloporia cf. alyxiae, and Scleroderma sp. Although the absence of ascomycetes may be associated with the short sampling period and timing of collections, the study highlights the considerable macrofungal diversity of Zabali’s ultramafic forests and emphasizes the importance of continued monitoring and conservation efforts for Philippine macrofungal resources.

Philippine Mushroom of the Week: Cymatoderma elegans

It looks like a fiery wine glass that might burn you if you take a sip! πŸ”₯πŸ·πŸ„ Meet Cymatoderma elegans, commonly known as the leathery goblet, a wine-glass-shaped fungus that can reach up to 30 cm in diameter, with occasional fruiting bodies growing even larger.

This polypore fungus belongs to the family Meruliaceae and thrives on rotting logs, decaying tree branches, and wet deadwood. Its upper surface is leathery, radially ridged, and concentrically zoned in shades of cream, yellow, and woody brown. The flesh is very thin and tough or leathery, while the margins of the wine-glass-shaped fruiting body are often ragged or torn. C. elegans has a pantropical and subtropical distribution, occurring across major tropical regions, including Africa, Asia, Australia, and the Americas.

Beyond its elegant appearance, C. elegans remains a relatively understudied mushroom. Currently, there is limited to no information available regarding its edibility and bioactive compounds. Further research may help uncover its potential biological properties and contribute to a better understanding of this tropical fungus.

Optimization of basidiospore germination and morphogenesis of Pleurotus ostreatus and Oudemansiella canarii

Highlights of the Study:

This study established the optimal conditions for basidiospore germination and documented the complete developmental stages of two economically important edible mushrooms, Pleurotus ostreatus (CLSU strain) and Oudemansiella canarii (OCNu strain). Coconut water was identified as the most suitable culture medium for both species, with optimal germination occurring at pH 6 for O. canarii and pH 7 for P. ostreatus, under alternating light/dark conditions at room temperature (33–35 Β°C). The study also provided a detailed photographic account of mushroom development from basidiospore germination through vegetative growth to mature basidiocarp formation, offering valuable insights into their life cycles. These findings provide a scientific basis for improving cultivation protocols and promoting sustainable mushroom production through enhanced biomass yield and fruiting performance.
