415th.Founding Anniversary of Pontifical and Royal University of Sto.Tomas

On this day in 1611, the University of Santo Tomas (UST), the oldest existing university in Asia, was founded in Intramuros, Manila through the initiative of Bishop Miguel de Benavides, O.P., the third Archbishop of Manila.

Originally established as the Colegio de Nuestra Señora del Santísimo Rosario, it was later renamed Colegio de Santo Tomas in honor of St. Thomas Aquinas. Due to a growing student population, the university opened a new campus at Barrio Sulucan, Sampaloc in 1927. Its Intramuros campus continued operations until it was destroyed during World War II.
