"Where peacemaking is life-giving." Sacred Heart Diocesan School
History
Armed with the cross and a strong missionary spirit, Msgr. The founder, Msgr. Sr.
Patrick Cronin, SSC, a Columban Missionary from Ireland blazed a trail. He brought forth to a marshy patch of land then called Salug Diut(now Blancia) an education which aimed to provide academic and spiritual formation for the youth. The school year 1950-1951 saw the birth of a new school housed in a building constructed under the supervision of Mr.Claudio Potestas. Cronin was the director with t
he able to support of Fr. James Murloy as assistant director. Tirelessly aiding them were six teachers who devoted their time to two classes of first year and one class of second year. They were Mr. Guillermo Cabezon- the principal, Mr. Zacarias Revil, the registrar, Mrs. Candida Revil, Mrs.Dolores Ag Villondo, Mrs. Regina Galupo and Mr. Margarito Dujali. A year later, Fr.Michael Donohue succeeded as the second school director with Fr. Patrick Lavin and Fr. James Mulroy as assistant directors. The population had grown to three classes of first year, two classes of second year and one class of third year. New faces were added to the teaching force: Mrs. Perla Peralta, Mrs. Remedios Calope, Mrs. Nester Ponce and Mr. Melanio Ponce. The first graduation was held in 1953 with Luciano Sobretodo as valedictorian and Arcadia Caballero as salutatorian. From then on the students increased to one class every year. It was during this year that the church building was utilized for the class of one section of first year. It was considered a town site branch. New members of the faculty were added- Mr. Caracut and Mr. Toledo. Being partial to the poor and those who have not yet heard the Word of God, the Irish missionary priests moved on to the highlands hence the necessity of finding right people to supervise the school. Unmindful of the mud resulting from almost year downpour or the scorching heat of the sun during summer season the courageous women of vision, the Missionary Sisters of St. Columban, Rev. Mother Teresa and Sr. Felicitas came to help the director in administering the school which was eventually turned over to them in 1953-1954. The staff increased with the coming of Mrs. Lucena Cabog and Mr. Camilo Cabillo. The population increased by heaps and bounds. Two sections of fourth year students graduated with Pedro Jamero as valedictorian and Dorothea Higuillena as salutatorian. Mother Augustine took over as directress after Mother Teresa’s term in 1954-1955. The valedictorian and salutatorian of the graduating class were Augusto Cernol and Luisa Rafols (+ Luisa Regis) respectively. The earthquake of 1955 destroyed partially the school building and so it was demolished and transferred from Camp 7 to the present site in Molave. The graduating class had Margarita Real as valedictorian and Arminda Bancat as salutatorian. Since then Sacred Heart High School has never stopped growing in the able hands of Mother Perpetua, Sr. Felicitas, Sr. Teresita Bernad, Mother Bernad, Sr. Kathleen McGrath, Sr. Elizabeth Moran, Sr. Patricia McGuiness. Julie Dowling, Sr. Rose O’ Mahoney, Sr. Maura Gallahue, Sr. Maureen Donohue, Sr. Kathleen Melia, Sr. Margareth Murphy, Sr. Clement, Sr. Clarita Lachica, Sr. Mercedes Ventenilla, Sr. Divina Lua each in her own different way of maintaining the standard of the school. SHHS has been involved in community programs and movements especially during the last quarter of the 20th century. It has continued to send forth graduates who have been carrying the vision of this institution and who become instruments in spreading the burning flame of love of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Many of them have been instruments in the promotion of the culture of peace in Mindanao. Times have changed, man/woman has conquered space, fashions come and go, yet the Columban Sisters, the women with vision, never falter in their mission to reach out to others who have not yet known His love, to people who lost their hope, to those who thirst for the Word of God. Believing that they have done enough for the education apostolate in Molave and aiming to empower the local clergy to run the school, the Sisters turned over this institution to the Diocese in 1992. Upon the invitation of Msgr. Antonio Tobias, the Local Ordinary of Pagadian Diocese, the Brothers for Christian Communities administered the school with Brother Fermin Amodan as director from 1992-1995. A new bishop, Rev. Zacharias C. Jimenez formerly the parish priest of this town, was installed in the diocese in 1995. It was during this year that the school was administered by the Diocesan Clergy. Fr. Rey Mutia became the first diocesan priest who courageously accepted the call to administer the school. During that year the Kindergarten School of the parish, a brainchild of the bishop, was affiliated to and is now under the supervision of the school. This is the reason why the name of the school is changed to Sacred Heart Diocesan School to include the pre-school which is also performing well. From a congregation school for forty-two years to a diocesan school, Sacred Heart Diocesan School has grown with the time. Community extension programs like the catechetical service to the public elementary pupils, jail visitation, and for some time the Special Education for the handicapped children have been carried on with extraordinary commitment. Is spite of the threats facing catholic schools today, the school continues to maintain the quality of her education under the supervision of the Diocesan clergy- Fr. Rey Mutia from 1995 to 1999 then Fr. Eugene Elson Cagoco from 1999-2005 and the Missionary Congregation of Mary (MCM), Sr. Joy Cajes, Sr. Teresita Sajelan from 2005-2011 and Sr. Felisa Lorena Batusin 2011 to the present. The school is like a citadel on a lofty hill, maintaining its academic excellence and Christian values, the hallmarks of Catholic Education. It can look back to its beginnings with so much gratitude and dwell in the glory and honor
