𝓘𝓷𝓭𝓲𝓰𝓮𝓚𝓷𝓸𝔀𝓼 𝓶𝓸 𝓫𝓪?🧐

𝑻𝒖𝒕𝒖𝒑 is a traditional handwoven food cover of the Tausug and Sama communities of 𝑻𝒂𝒘𝒊-𝑻𝒂𝒘𝒊 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑺𝒖𝒍𝒖, traditionally crafted from pandan, nipa, and buri leaves. The word “𝒕𝒖𝒕𝒖𝒑,” meaning “𝒕𝒐 𝒄𝒍𝒐𝒔𝒆” in Indonesian, reflects the close cultural and historical connections shared between our heritage and those of our neighboring Southeast Asian communities.

Similar to the Sama’s turong dulang, tutup features 𝒄𝒐𝒍𝒐𝒓𝒇𝒖𝒍 𝒈𝒆𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒕𝒓𝒊𝒄 𝒘𝒐𝒗𝒆𝒏 𝒑𝒂𝒕𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒏𝒔 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒊𝒔 𝒅𝒆𝒔𝒊𝒈𝒏𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒐 𝒄𝒐𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒕𝒆𝒄𝒕 𝒇𝒐𝒐𝒅 𝒘𝒉𝒊𝒍𝒆 𝒉𝒆𝒍𝒑𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒓𝒆𝒕𝒂𝒊𝒏 𝒊𝒕𝒔 𝒘𝒂𝒓𝒎𝒕𝒉. While the turong dulang has a dome-shaped basket, a looped lid, and handles, the tutup is slightly larger and consists mainly of the woven lid. Beyond its practical purpose, this traditional craft represents the creativity, identity, and enduring weaving traditions of the communities that continue to
preserve it.

Bilang pakikiisa sa mga aktibidad na inihanda ng Provincial Youth Development Office (PYDO) ng Pamahalaang Panlalawigan ng Isabela, nakilahok ang Club of Living Traditions sa pagdiriwang ng 2026 𝑰𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒏𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒍 𝒀𝒐𝒖𝒕𝒉 𝑫𝒂𝒚 noong Agosto 12, 2026 sa SM City Cauayan.

Bilang isa sa 𝑻𝒐𝒑 18 na napili para sa Pitch Competition, nagkaroon ng pagkakataon ang CLT na ibahagi ang 𝑺𝒂𝒏 𝑮𝒖𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒂𝒏 𝑪𝒉𝒊𝒑𝒔, isang produktong gumagamit ng balat ng saging upang mabawasan ang banana peel waste matapos gamitin ang laman nito.

Mas naging makabuluhan ang paglahok ng CLT dahil pormal din nitong natanggap ang 𝑪𝒆𝒓𝒕𝒊𝒇𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒕𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝑨𝒄𝒄𝒓𝒆𝒅𝒊𝒕𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒃𝒊𝒍𝒂𝒏𝒈 𝒀𝑶𝑹𝑷 𝑨𝒄𝒄𝒓𝒆𝒅𝒊𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝑶𝒓𝒈𝒂𝒏𝒊𝒛𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏, na nagsisilbing pagkilala sa pagiging bahagi ng organisasyon sa Youth Organization Registration Program.

Last July 4, 2026, the 𝑪𝒍𝒖𝒃 𝒐𝒇 𝑳𝒊𝒗𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑻𝒓𝒂𝒅𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔 held its first official meeting with the newly elected officers for the academic year 2026-2027. The session focused on the Constitution and By-Laws, the General Plan of Actions for the first term, and other important agendas. 𝓘𝓷𝓭𝓲𝓰𝓮𝓚𝓷𝓸𝔀𝓼 𝓶𝓸 𝓫𝓪?🧐

The 𝑶𝒕𝒐𝒏 𝑮𝒐𝒍𝒅 𝑫𝒆𝒂𝒕𝒉 𝑴𝒂𝒔𝒌 reflects a deep-rooted Visayan belief in the afterlife, serving as a sacred protective covering for the eyes and nose of the deceased to ward off evil spirits.

This intricate artifact, discovered in a grave site in 𝐤𝐚𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐦𝐚𝐧 (𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐢𝐧 𝐒𝐚𝐧 𝐀𝐧𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐨), 𝐎𝐭𝐨𝐧, 𝐈𝐥𝐨𝐢𝐥𝐨 in 1967, highlights the pre-colonial (late 14th to early 15th century) practice of honoring individuals of high social status through funerary gold. Because according to the fate of a Visayan soul after death narrated in Ignacio (1668) in 𝑳𝒂 𝑯𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒊𝒂 𝒅𝒆 𝒍𝒂 𝑰𝒔𝒍𝒂𝒔 𝒆 𝑰𝒏𝒅𝒊𝒐𝒔 𝒅𝒆 𝑽𝒊𝒔𝒂𝒚𝒂𝒔.

The soul travels via 𝒃𝒂𝒍𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒂𝒚 to places like 𝑺𝒊𝒔𝒊𝒃𝒖𝒓𝒂𝒏𝒆𝒏 or 𝑺𝒂𝒚𝒂𝒓, where deities like 𝑩𝒂𝒓𝒂𝒓𝒖𝒎 only recognize the deceased through the glittering Oton Gold Death Mask.(Loarca, 1903) Such craftsmanship proves that ancient Filipino communities possessed a sophisticated understanding of metallurgy and a profound reverence for the journey of the soul.

In accordance to the National Museum of the Philippines, the gold's brilliance was meant to mirror the status of the departed person, ensuring that they were recognized by ancestors in the spirit world. These thin sheets were delicately embossed with patterns, acting as a symbolic barrier against the influence of "𝒂𝒔𝒘𝒂𝒏𝒈" or malevolent entities (CCP Encyclopedia of Philippine Art).

By sealing the facial orifices with precious metal, the living ensured the integrity of the body remained intact during its transition. This burial custom remains a powerful testament to the spiritual complexity and artistic mastery found within early Visayan society.
