𝓘𝓷𝓭𝓲𝓰𝓮𝓚𝓷𝓸𝔀𝓼 𝓶𝓸 𝓫𝓪?🧐

Food being prepared for the 𝒌𝒂𝒑𝒂𝒚𝒗𝒂𝒏𝒖𝒗𝒂𝒏𝒖𝒂, an annual ritual performed by the 𝑴𝒂𝒕𝒂𝒘 fishermen to open the 𝒗𝒂𝒏𝒖𝒂, to call the dorados into their fishing ground and to ask the spirits to bring forth luck and forestall tragedies. Batanes, Philippines.

Before the first boat is launched and the first line is cast, the 𝑴𝒂𝒕𝒂𝒘 fishermen of Diura Village in Mahatao, Batanes gather at the rocky shores to prepare not just their nets, but their offerings. The 𝑲𝒂𝒑𝒂𝒚𝒗𝒂𝒏𝒖𝒗𝒂𝒏𝒖𝒂 is the 𝑰𝒗𝒂𝒕𝒂𝒏'𝒔 sacred annual ritual that opens the 𝒗𝒂𝒏𝒖𝒂 — the community's spiritual access to the sea — calling the dorado fish into their waters and asking the spirits to grant abundance and protect the fishermen from harm. Rooted in an indigenous belief system that sees the sea as a living, sentient guardian, the ritual involves prayer, animal sacrifice, and a communal feast prepared and shared by the entire community.

The image of hands working side by side over large leaves spread across river stones — peeling garlic, sorting shallots, chopping greens — captures the heart of this tradition. In 𝑰𝒗𝒂𝒕𝒂𝒏 culture, no one prepares alone and no one eats alone. The act of cooking is itself an act of worship: an offering laid out not only for the people gathered on the shore, but for the spirits that govern the deep. To feed the community and to honor the sea are never two separate acts. They are always one.

What was once overlooked is now a symbol of collective action, environmental stewardship, and student-led initiative.

This activity is more than just a physical transformation, it reflects the shared commitment of PNUANs to sustainability, cultural appreciation, and community engagement. Through every plant nurtured and every space improved, the spirit of panagmúla ken panagpapíntas lives on: a reminder that meaningful change begins with small, united efforts🌱💙💛

The 𝑶𝒕𝒐𝒏 𝑮𝒐𝒍𝒅 𝑫𝒆𝒂𝒕𝒉 𝑴𝒂𝒔𝒌 reflects a deep-rooted Visayan belief in the afterlife, serving as a sacred protective covering for the eyes and nose of the deceased to ward off evil spirits.

This intricate artifact, discovered in a grave site in 𝐤𝐚𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐦𝐚𝐧 (𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐢𝐧 𝐒𝐚𝐧 𝐀𝐧𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐨), 𝐎𝐭𝐨𝐧, 𝐈𝐥𝐨𝐢𝐥𝐨 in 1967, highlights the pre-colonial (late 14th to early 15th century) practice of honoring individuals of high social status through funerary gold. Because according to the fate of a Visayan soul after death narrated in Ignacio (1668) in 𝑳𝒂 𝑯𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒊𝒂 𝒅𝒆 𝒍𝒂 𝑰𝒔𝒍𝒂𝒔 𝒆 𝑰𝒏𝒅𝒊𝒐𝒔 𝒅𝒆 𝑽𝒊𝒔𝒂𝒚𝒂𝒔.

The soul travels via 𝒃𝒂𝒍𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒂𝒚 to places like 𝑺𝒊𝒔𝒊𝒃𝒖𝒓𝒂𝒏𝒆𝒏 or 𝑺𝒂𝒚𝒂𝒓, where deities like 𝑩𝒂𝒓𝒂𝒓𝒖𝒎 only recognize the deceased through the glittering Oton Gold Death Mask.(Loarca, 1903) Such craftsmanship proves that ancient Filipino communities possessed a sophisticated understanding of metallurgy and a profound reverence for the journey of the soul.

In accordance to the National Museum of the Philippines, the gold's brilliance was meant to mirror the status of the departed person, ensuring that they were recognized by ancestors in the spirit world. These thin sheets were delicately embossed with patterns, acting as a symbolic barrier against the influence of "𝒂𝒔𝒘𝒂𝒏𝒈" or malevolent entities (CCP Encyclopedia of Philippine Art).

By sealing the facial orifices with precious metal, the living ensured the integrity of the body remained intact during its transition. This burial custom remains a powerful testament to the spiritual complexity and artistic mastery found within early Visayan society.

The 𝒑𝒖𝒅𝒐𝒏𝒈 is a traditional form of signaling used by 𝑰𝒈𝒐𝒓𝒐𝒕 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒎𝒖𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒆𝒔 𝒊𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑪𝒐𝒓𝒅𝒊𝒍𝒍𝒆𝒓𝒂 𝒓𝒆𝒈𝒊𝒐𝒏. It is made by tying the leaves of reed grass into a distinct knot, which serves as a simple but meaningful way of communicating important messages within the community.

Despite its basic form, the 𝒑𝒖𝒅𝒐𝒏𝒈 carries multiple interpretations depending on where it is placed. It can signal “𝒅𝒐𝒏’𝒕 𝒑𝒂𝒔𝒔 𝒐𝒓 𝒕𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒑𝒂𝒔𝒔,” especially during 𝒏𝒈𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒏 or sacred village rituals when movement in or out of the area is restricted. It can also mean “𝒅𝒐𝒏’𝒕 𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒓,” particularly when placed near rivers or boundaries. In other situations, it functions as a warning sign to alert people of possible danger, such as cliffs, landslide-prone areas, or other unsafe paths. Lastly, it may also indicate “don’t touch,” marking ownership of goods or materials that should not be taken or disturbed.

Overall, the 𝒑𝒖𝒅𝒐𝒏𝒈 reflects how Indigenous communities developed practical and effective ways of communicating without written signs. It shows a deep sense of awareness, shared responsibility, and respect for communal rules. Even today, this practice continues in parts of the Cordillera, highlighting its cultural importance and continued relevance in guiding and protecting people.

As advocates of safe and inclusive spaces, we also joined in raising awareness for the Safe Spaces Act or Bawal Bastos Law, capturing meaningful moments with the tarpaulin provided during the event. More than just participation, this experience reflects our dedication to stand alongside fellow youth leaders in protecting dignity, promoting respect, and strengthening community values.

Through unity and action, we continue to uphold our role as culture bearers and changemakers—amplifying voices, preserving traditions, and building safer spaces for all.
