The UP Visayas Regional Research Center (UPV RRC) - Materials Science and Nanotechnology Laboratory successfully conducted the free lecture-workshop entitled "Beyond the Looking Glass: Seeing with Electrons", anchored on the center's Technical Assistance and Extension Program - Realizing Research Capacities. It was conducted last on 21 May 2026 at the UPV RRC Audiovisual Room in Miagao, Iloilo, providing participants with an engaging introduction to the fascinating world of Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM).

The one-day capacity-building activity brought together faculty members and researchers to explore how electron microscopy enables the visualization and analysis of structures. Participants gained foundational knowledge on the principles and applications of SEM across various scientific disciplines.

The workshop featured discussions on SEM sample preparation for both biological and non-biological specimens, as well as practical demonstrations on particle size analysis using ImageJ and RStudio, equipping attendees with valuable analytical skills for research.

The UPV RRC continues to fulfill its mandate of strengthening research capacities by making advanced scientific techniques more accessible to the academic community and partner institutions. The activity reflects the Center's commitment to promoting multidisciplinary research, innovation, and scientific excellence through inclusive training and technical capacity-building opportunities.

𝐒𝐎𝐈𝐋: 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐅𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬, 𝐒𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐈𝐧𝐟𝐫𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 - Building resilient communities begins from the ground up.

The Materials Science and Nanotechnology Laboratory of the UPV Regional Research Center (UPV RRC), in collaboration with DOST-Balik Scientist Prof. Jebie A. Balagosa, PhD, and the projected leader of the DOST-funded GEO-DYNAMIX Project implemented at Central Philippine University - CPU, successfully conducted the public lecture entitled "SOIL: Strong Foundations, Smart Infrastructure" last May 14, 2026, at the UPV RRC Audio-visual Room in Miagao, Iloilo.

The activity provided participants with a fresh perspective on material behavior, geotechnical engineering, and sustainable infrastructure development. Through engaging discussions, practical insights, and real-world applications, attendees explored how science and engineering contribute to building safer, smarter, and more sustainable communities. This initiative highlighted the vital role of materials science and geotechnical studies in addressing contemporary challenges in infrastructure and environmental sustainability.

It was participated in by several students, faculty members, and researchers from Central Philippine University, Department of Chemistry UPV , UPV School of Technology, and Philippine Science High School Western Visayas. Right after the lecture, participants were given the chance to have a tour at the RRC MSN Laboratory and personally observe their various equipment and benchmark the capabilities of the laboratory and the UPV RRC.

This shows RRC's commitment to research and development, fostering scientific literacy, promoting interdisciplinary collaboration, and empowering future researchers and innovators through meaningful learning opportunities.

The Materials Science and Nanotechnology Laboratory successfully conducted a specialized training on “𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗰 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻 𝗠𝗶𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘀𝗰𝗼𝗽𝘆 – 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗫-𝗿𝗮𝘆 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗼𝘀𝗰𝗼𝗽𝘆 (𝗦𝗘𝗠-𝗘𝗗𝗦)” last May 5, 2026, at the Regional Research Center.

This hands-on training was uniquely participated in by high school students from Passi National High School, demonstrating that advanced scientific learning is not limited to higher education. The activity introduced young learners to SEM principles, proper sample preparation, SEM imaging, and EDS analysis—providing them with early exposure to cutting-edge research tools and techniques.

By equipping high school students with foundational research skills, the laboratory continues to foster curiosity, build confidence, and inspire future scientists. This initiative reflects a strong commitment to inclusive capacity development and the cultivation of innovation at all levels of education.
