If you have ever been at the receiving end of the “Sino sa inyo ang lalaki?” question, chances are, you didn’t know what to say. As a q***r teenage girl, I did not know what to say. Still, I knew it meant to ask: in a relationship between two teenage girls, who’s more masculine? But beneath this seemingly harmless question, the modern Filipino lens sees q***r relationships as black and white, and acceptance is watered down to mere tolerance.

Expressions like ‘tomboy na may Mio’, or ‘sabi ko na barbie’ were born out of this belief as euphemisms, but it has turned into boxes that confine q***r individuals.

In a society where cis-heteronormative language is treated as “standard” or “grammatically correct,” ⚖️📚 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗟𝗚𝗕𝗧𝗤𝗜𝗔+ 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲. 🏳️‍🌈🚫 When language centers only one way of being, it reinforces systems that decide whose identities are valid, and whose are ignored. ❌👤
Challenging cis-heteronormative language is an act of resistance. ✊🔥 It pushes back against gendered power structures that restrict how gender is understood, expressed, and accepted. 🧠🔓

Gender-inclusive language is rooted in respect and dignity for people of all genders. 🤝💖 Its purpose is simple but powerful: to ensure that everyone feels seen, heard, and included. 👀👂✨ It acknowledges that gender is experienced differently by each person and 𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗷𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗲, 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, especially those based solely on appearance. 🚫⚠️

By using gender-inclusive language, we actively challenge gender stereotypes and demonstrate our commitment to inclusion and equity. 🌈⚖️ It is not just about words—it’s about 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝘀, 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗶𝗮𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 (Public Service Alliance of Canada, 2018). 🏳️‍⚧️📖
