Every lens works against the tide. Every pen shines through shadows. Every publication uncovers a jar of stories waiting to be opened. And within every account of truth are voices that seek to inform, represent, and speak for others.
From the students, by the students, and for the broader struggle for campus press freedom, the CMS 130 class presents BYLINE VOLUME II, unpacking the strengths, perseverance, and survival of the universityโs four college publications: Ang Mangingisda, Pagbutlak, Tibud, and The Accounts.
For every issue printed, every article published, and every truth pursued, there is a campus journalist choosing courage over silence. Their stories do more than document the times; they become part of the struggle to shape them.

Asst. Prof. John Ray Hontanar presented his paper entitled โBabaylanic Ecologies: An Ecocritical Reading of Budjette Tan and Kajo Baldisimoโs Trese: High Tide at Midnightโ at the Mechademia International Conference. The conference was held at the National University of Singapore last May 29-30, 2026 with theme, Traversing Trans-Asian Imaginaries: Anime, Manga and Media Cultures
Asst. Prof. Hontanar's paper undertakes an ecocritical reading of Trese, Budjette Tan and KaJo Baldissimoโs critically acclaimed Filipino graphic novel, by foregrounding the figure of Alexandra Trese as a contemporary babaylan who mediates between human and nonhuman worlds. Drawing on the indigenous epistemologies embodied in the babaylanic tradition, the study interrogates how Trese: High Tide at Midnight reframes environmental anxieties and urban ecological crises through myth, folklore, and ritual. By situating the supernatural beings, from sea-dwelling monsters displaced by urban sprawl to monstrous manifestations of capitalism and pollution, as allegories of environmental disruption, the analysis reveals the textโs critique of Manilaโs extractive modernization and its erasure of ecological memory.
The babaylanic lens positions Trese not merely as an enforcer of law and order, but as a cultural and ecological mediator who negotiates the coexistence of humans, spirits, and the urban environment. Through this framework, Trese emerges as a site where postcolonial ecologies and indigenous cosmologies converge, offering an urgent commentary on ecocriticism and environmental justice in the Philippine context.
โจCongratulations, Sir Rei!
