🌱 𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐁𝐈𝐎𝐓𝐄𝐂𝐇 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐬! 🔬

The UP Visayas Regional Research Center (UPV RRC) welcomed the Department of Agriculture - Biotech Program team, headed by Dir. Paul Limson, Technical Committee Member, together with Dr. Nina Gloriani and other representatives from the DA Biotechnology Program Office (BPO), for a benchmarking and facility tour of the Center.

The team visited the Materials Science and Nanotechnology Laboratory, Food, Feeds, & Functional Nutrition Laboratory, and Biology Laboratory introduced the multidisciplinary research programs of UPV RRC, its laboratory facilities, research support services, and capabilities that drive innovation in fisheries, aquatic sciences, biotechnology, and other allied disciplines. They also visited the Philippine Genome Center Visayas right after.

By fostering meaningful collaborations and knowledge exchange, the UPV RRC continues to strengthen partnerships that empower future scientists, accelerate research and development, and promote Science for the People.

The UP Visayas Regional Research Center (UPV RRC) welcomed the second batch of Global Health Scholars from the Penn State College of Medicine through the College of Medicine - West Visayas State University (WVSU-COM) Global Health Scholars Pathway (GHSP) for an educational and benchmarking visit to the UPV Miagao Campus. The visit formed part of the scholars' international health immersion program in the Philippines and provided an opportunity to learn about UPV's research, innovation, and community engagement initiatives.

During the visit, the delegates toured the UPV RRC Materials Science and Nanotechnology Laboratory and the Food, Feeds, & Functional Nutrition Laboratory, then went to the Philippine Genome Center Visayas, and other academic facilities, gaining firsthand exposure to the University's multidisciplinary research infrastructure and its contributions to public health, fisheries, and sustainable development.

The UPV Regional Research Center remains committed to strengthening global academic partnerships and advancing scientific collaboration by providing meaningful learning opportunities that connect research, innovation, and public service.

As part of the internship activities under the Research Residency Program for College students, interns at the Applied Chemistry Laboratory and Materials Science and Nanotechnology Laboratory underwent a lecture-demonstration on 3D Scanning with the i2i Makerspace last July 07, 2026 at the RRC AC Lab.

Students from various institutions, including Capiz State University - Pontevedra Campus, University of the Philippines Los Baños, and Chemistry UPV , were capacitated with another skill complementing their respective research capabilities in Chemistry, Fisheries, and Applied Physics. These efforts demonstrate the UPV RRC’s commitment towards support in research and development for the people.

𝐉𝐈𝐑𝐂𝐀𝐒 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐑𝐂

Researchers from the Fisheries Division of the JIRCAS-Japan International Research Center for Agricultural Sciences, led by Dr. Satoshi Watanabe, visited the UP Visayas Regional Research Center last July 03, 2026.

The delegation included Dr. Tetsuya Sanda, Dr. Keishi Matsuda, Dr. Shacho Mastuda, and Division Head Dr. Satoshi Watanabe. They were accompanied by Asst. Prof. Joemel Sumbing, PhD of the UPV School of Technology - BS Chemical Engineering Program.

During the visit, the delegation conducted a quick laboratory benchmarking activity and explored the analytical capabilities and technical services of the UPV RRC Materials Science and Nanotechnology Laboratory, with particular interest in its spectroscopy and microscopy facilities. This provided a platform to discuss research applications, and identify potential areas for possible scientific engagement.

The UPV RRC remains committed to fostering research collaborations, advancing scientific excellence, and delivering quality research and development initiatives that contribute to innovation and sustainable development.

The UP Visayas Regional Research Center (UPV RRC), together with the UPV Benchmarking Activities Committee, Coastline 5023: DOST - UPV Fisheries TBI and the UP Visayas - Institute of Aquaculture, welcomed delegates from the Ministry of Trade, Investments and Tourism of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) – Tawi-Tawi Provincial Office for a benchmarking visit focused on MTIT-BARMM's goal of advancing the seaweed industry through research, innovation, and value addition.

The delegation engaged in meaningful discussions on research and development initiatives with the Food, Feeds, & Functional Nutrition Laboratory, Materials Science and Nanotechnology Laboratory, Philippine Genome Center Visayas, UPV Seaweed Laboratory, and several institutions that address key challenges facing the seaweed sector, including emerging strategies to mitigate ice-ice disease, shared ongoing innovations in the seaweed value chain, and the potential of the advanced analytical equipment at the UPV RRC.

The discussion underscored the importance of integrating indigenous knowledge, local enterprise, and research-driven solutions to enhance livelihoods while promoting the cultural identity and economic potential of the Bangsamoro region, highlighting the initiatives of Seaweed Research and Development Center of MSU Tawi-Tawi College of Technology and Oceanography.

The visit also fostered dialogue on strengthening partnerships among government agencies, academic institutions, researchers, and local communities to accelerate sustainable blue economy initiatives and inclusive regional development.
