National Heroes Day, a holiday held every last Monday of August, has served as a commemoration of the heroes who have fought and still continue to uphold the rights of every Filipino. For years, we have learned and studied the events, such as the Cry of Pugad Lawin, that shaped our nation into what it is today; we must remember how and who pushed us to get here.
In the past, significant figures such as Andres Bonifacio and Dr. Jose Rizal fought in different fields: Bonifacio, who led the Katipunan through battles against the Spaniards, while Rizal implanted the sense of nationalism within the hearts of the people through books; each of their efforts has contributed to one collective movement of the Filipinos to fight against colonialism and stand as one nation.
In the present time, the tales and stories of each of these heroes have been passed on to succeeding generations. In a time where corruption, hatred, and violations against basic human rights run rampant, we ought to instill a sense of nationalism to fight against those who are taking advantage of us.
A day wherein Filipinos pay tribute to all individuals who contributed and sacrificed in the name of achieving our identity, justice against tyranny, peace, and freedom. National Heroes Day is dedicated to honoring the bravery, selflessness, and patriotism of Filipinos who fought for freedom and shaped the nation we now call our own. National Heroes Day honors and remembers known and unknown heroes of the revolution who paved the way for the countryโs independence after centuries of foreign rule.
Commemorating heroism does not only end in the pages of our history books, yet it continues to live on in every Filipino who chooses service over self, compassion over indifference, and integrity over comfort. Modern day heroes are those Filipinos who continue to uplift the lives of others and in aims of building a better tomorrow for our nation.
As chemical engineers, we look for ways in which we can turn a small lab procedure into a large-scale production. We must see the importance of how a small action by a hero managed to ignite the hearts of all Filipinos and sparked a national revolution.
This day does not serve as the only day our heroes are remembered, but a day that serves as a reminder that we ought to keep the legacy alive filled with courage, kindness, and commitment to nation-building. This day reminds us to look back and honor the past, continue to strengthen the present, and to look forward in shaping the future.
