The Division of Biological Sciences (DBS) of the University of the Philippines Visayas College of Arts and Sciences (UPV CAS) begins their Division Opening at the CFOS AV Hall this morning, Aug. 20.

This event is held to formally start the academic year by introducing the curriculum, faculty, and the culture of the programs under the division, BS in Biology and BS in Public Health.

Benico, Professor II from the Department of Biological Sciences, Central Luzon State University (CLSU).

Dr. Benico delivered a talk entitled:

The lecture highlighted the critical role of taxonomy and systematics in understanding Philippine marine microalgal diversity and how accurate species identification can provide the foundation for molecular diagnostics, environmental monitoring, and early detection of harmful algal blooms (HABs).

The talk was attended by around 200 participants, including students, researchers, faculty members, and representatives from UP Visayas and other State Universities and Colleges (SUCs).

The strong participation reflects the growing interest in Philippine marine biodiversity, microalgal research, and the application of taxonomy and molecular approaches to address emerging environmental and public health concerns

WELCOMING OUR NEW MS in BIOLOGY GRADUATE STUDENTS!

The Division of Biological Sciences, Graduate School, UP Visayas officially welcomed our newest Master of Science in Biology students during the MS Biology Program Orientation 2026. The gathering gave our incoming students a warm welcome as they prepare to start their graduate studies and research work in the university.

The event opened with inspiring words from Dr. Diana P. Paguntalan, Chair of the Division of Biological Sciences, who shared the importance of strong scientific research and community service. Dr. Mark Calabon then introduced the division's graduate faculty, giving students a first look at the mentors who will guide their academic journey. To help everyone prepare for the semester ahead, Dr. Annabelle GC del Norte-Campos, the MS Bio Program Coordinator (2025โ€“2026), walked the students through the program details, course paths, and key guidelines.

Over snacks, the new students introduced themselves, shared their research interests, and chatted directly with prospective advisers during an open forum. To wrap up the event, Dr. Eric Zeus Rizo, the incoming MS Bio Program Coordinator, offered encouraging closing remarks to kick off the new chapter. The Division also extends its appreciation to Dr. Karen A. Villarta-Lane for guiding the program smoothly as emcee.
