Dr. Ombao’s lecture explores the statistical and mathematical foundations of analyzing brain signals using electroencephalograms (EEGs). He will discuss how EEG signals can be represented through Fourier waveforms, introduce the concept of coherence as a measure of spectral dependence, and present statistical methods for characterizing connectivity and dependence within brain networks.

Dr. Ombao will also share exciting updates from his ongoing research and present notable findings from the Biostatistics research group he leads at KAUST.

Whether you're a student, researcher, educator, or simply curious about how mathematics helps us understand the brain, this lecture is not to be missed.

See you there!

Congratulations to Dr. Resurreccion Sadaba for co-authoring a newly published study in the journal Anthropocene Coasts!

The research article, "Mangrove social-ecological system of Batan, Aklan, Philippines," was led by authors Johann Stiepani and Rosemarie Pacis. Their collaborative work examines the localized impacts of mangrove forest degradation and its relationship with coastal livelihoods.

Key Findings:

Biodiversity Assessment: The study identified 12 mangrove tree species, including the endangered Camptostemon philippinensis and the economically significant Nypa fruticans.

Socioeconomic Impact: Household surveys across five study sites illustrate how heavily local communities depend on these ecosystems for small-scale fisheries and material resources.

Management Recommendations: Local residents highlighted critical environmental shifts, such as coastal erosion, and advocated for increased reforestation, regular coastal cleanups, and strategic fisheries zoning.

Conclusion: The authors conclude that even degraded or fragmented mangrove ecosystems remain vital to regional biodiversity and local livelihoods, making targeted conservation essential.

Strengthening Partnerships in Science & Diagnostics!

The Department of Pathology Laboratory of Western Visayas Medical Center visited the Division of Biological Sciences today for a highly productive and engaging learning exchange.

The team immersed themselves in classical culture-based techniques for bacterial identification, gaining valuable hands-on experience with traditional microbiological methods that continue to serve as the foundation of diagnostic practice. The visit sparked meaningful discussions on laboratory skills, best practices, and innovative approaches in microbiological diagnostics.

This visit marks the beginning of a formal collaboration between DBS and the WVMC Pathology Laboratory. Moving forward, we are excited to pursue joint research initiatives, knowledge exchange, and capacity-building programs in microbiology and diagnostic science.

As part of this partnership, BS Biology students from DBS will also have the opportunity to intern at WVMC’s Molecular Biology and Medical Microbiology Laboratory, providing them with real-world clinical exposure and advanced training.
We look forward to more fruitful collaborations ahead!

[UP CODE RE GRADE SOLICITATION]

The University Code prohibits any form of grade solicitation. Article 377 of the University Code states:
"No student of the University shall solicit directly or indirectly any grade from his/her professor. Any student violating this rule shall lose credit in the subject(s) regarding which such solicitation is made, without prejudice to the filing of a case for disciplinary action."

The email messages of students requesting for additional incentives, extra work or consideration in exchange for a higher grade can be considered as an evidence to support grade solicitation.
