Johnaxxel Mark Bonjoc Graduates at the Top of UPV SOTECH Class of 2026

Johnaxxel Mark T. Bonjoc, a student of Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering, was named the top student of the University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV) School of Technology (SoTech) Class of 2026. He achieved a General Weighted Average (GWA) of 1.3257, earning him the distinction of magna cm laude.

“Being a top student in my college stands as the proof of all my hard work and sacrifices I have dedicated to my studies. It is the greatest validation to myself that every time I give my best, it actually means something,” said Bonjoc.

Motivated by a deep desire to provide a better life for his family, he said, “I have always viewed education as key to having a better and more stable life, and that drive to uplift my family keeps me focused when things get difficult.”

“Before entering UP, I always thought that college life would be stressful, demanding, and overwhelming, that you had to be on guard all the time if you wanted to finish,” said Bonjoc. To him, this mindset may would only lead to negative memories of his college years. This realization made him to start enjoying his college life, “going to galas with friends, joining organizations, or playing sports even without prior experience.” Quoting his favorite song, “This life is amazing when you greet it with open arms", Bonjoc said he opened his arms and heart to the UP experience, which ultimately allowed him to fully enjoy his college life.

As Bonjoc developed a healthier and more balanced outlook on life, he reflected on a mindset he once held: “Every single study session should be perfectly scheduled and produce perfect results. However, throughout my stay in UP, I learned that not every day has to be a perfect, highly productive day. It is completely fine to rest or have fun when you do not feel like studying. The important thing is that you never stop. Even if you only manage to study or do activities for a few minutes today, what matters is that you try again tomorrow.”

Earning this degree strengthened his desire to contribute to society and create a positive change through this profession. “Because excellence comes with responsibility, I believe that my degree should not only be used for my personal advantage, but also for community progress. I intend to use the knowledge and technical skills I have learned and gained to help our economy and contribute to the sectors that need them most. With my chemical engineering degree, I can advance local environmental sustainability, ensure public health and food safety, or advocate for cleaner energy,” Bonjoc added.

Bonjoc said his experience at UP, the university molded him “not just into an academically excellent student, but also into a socially aware individual who understands the weight and responsibility of being a UP student.” He chose UP because of its commitment to quality education anchored in the core values of honor, excellence, and service to the nation.

When asked about his plans after graduation, Bonjoc answered, “My immediate plan after graduation is to lock in and review for the upcoming Chemical Engineering board exam. “

Throughout the conduct of his research, Louiel demonstrated remarkable dedication to advancing the fields of food innovation and functional foods. His study explored the utilization of ginger and Robusta coffee cascara, an often underutilized by-product of coffee processing, in the development of a novel beverage with promising sensory acceptability and health-promoting properties.

By integrating principles of food science, product development, and sustainability, his work highlights the potential of value-adding agricultural resources while responding to the growing demand for nutritious and functional food products. The study not only showcased scientific rigor and technical competence but also reflected creativity and relevance to contemporary challenges in food systems and consumer health.

His thesis entitled:

🌻 𝐎𝐍𝐄 𝐔𝐏𝐕 𝐌𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐎𝐮𝐭𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐞 🌻

The 𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗨𝗣𝗩 𝗠𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗢𝘂𝘁𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗱𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 is conferred upon a graduating student who best exemplifies the values of 𝓗𝓸𝓷𝓸𝓻, 𝓔𝔁𝓬𝓮𝓵𝓵𝓮𝓷𝓬𝓮, 𝓪𝓷𝓭 𝓢𝓮𝓻𝓿𝓲𝓬𝓮 through distinguished achievements in academics, leadership, and public service.

For academic excellence, our awardee graduates as one of the two 𝙢𝙖𝙜𝙣𝙖 𝙘𝙪𝙢 𝙡𝙖𝙪𝙙𝙚 of the BS Chemical Engineering program, alongside Johnaxxel, and finishes with the 𝙨𝙚𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙙 𝙝𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙚𝙨𝙩 𝙂𝙚𝙣𝙚𝙧𝙖𝙡 𝙒𝙚𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝘼𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙖𝙜𝙚 among the graduating class of SOTECH. Throughout his stay in the University, he consistently earned the distinction of being an 𝙃𝙤𝙣𝙤𝙧𝙞𝙛𝙞𝙘 𝙎𝙘𝙝𝙤𝙡𝙖𝙧 every semester. He also represented the University in various academic competitions both within and outside UP Visayas, most notably leading the UPV SOTECH team to a 𝟑𝓻𝓭 𝓟𝓵𝓪𝓬𝓮 finish in the 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗤𝘂𝗶𝘇 𝗕𝗼𝘄𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 as 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻.

Beyond academics, he demonstrated remarkable leadership through his roles as Team Captain of various academic teams in quiz bowls, case study competitions, and research conferences. His active involvement in student organizations, particularly within OUnCES and the UPV Debate Society, enabled him to spearhead initiatives that promoted student welfare, camaraderie, and intellectual engagement among his peers.

His commitment to service likewise extended beyond the University through his participation in outreach and educational initiatives. Through the 𝗨𝗣𝗩 𝗔𝗮𝗯𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗽 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗮𝗻, he volunteered as a 𝙐𝙋𝘾𝘼𝙏 𝙇𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚𝙧 for aspiring Iskolar ng Bayan, while his involvement in community seminars and awareness programs reflected his dedication to sharing knowledge and empowering communities through education.

Following the consolidation and rigorous evaluation of applications, the SOTECH Student Awards Committee has unanimously selected this year's recipient of the 𝐒𝐎𝐓𝐄𝐂𝐇 𝐃𝐞𝐚𝐧'𝐬 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝.

From serving as a staff member of 𝙏𝙞𝙗𝙪𝙙 to eventually leading the publication as its 𝗘𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿-𝗶𝗻-𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗲𝗳, our awardee has played an instrumental role in documenting and amplifying stories that matter, contributing significantly to media coverage not only within the School of Technology but throughout the University community.

As a BS Food Technology student, he actively balanced academics with 𝙣𝙪𝙢𝙚𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙨 𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙙𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙝𝙞𝙥 𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙥𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙞𝙗𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙚𝙨, including his involvement in the 𝙋𝙝𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙥𝙥𝙞𝙣𝙚 𝘼𝙨𝙨𝙤𝙘𝙞𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙤𝙛 𝙁𝙤𝙤𝙙 𝙏𝙚𝙘𝙝𝙣𝙤𝙡𝙤𝙜𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙨 – 𝙄𝙤𝙩𝙖 𝘾𝙝𝙖𝙥𝙩𝙚𝙧 (𝙋𝘼𝙁𝙏-𝙞), where he worked alongside fellow students in fostering camaraderie, professional growth, and service among future food technologists.

His leadership, however, extends far beyond the University. He served as 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗱 of 𝙋𝙧𝙤𝙟𝙚𝙘𝙩 𝘽𝙚𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙙 𝘽𝙖𝙧𝙨𝘀: Forum for YOUth: Active Citizenship and Human Rights Education, a provincial initiative promoting civic engagement and human rights awareness among the youth of Davao del Sur. He likewise represented PAFT-i as a 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗻𝘁 during the 𝙐𝙋 𝙎𝘿𝙂 𝙔𝙤𝙪𝙩𝙝 𝙎𝙪𝙢𝙢𝙞𝙩, contributing to community-based sustainability initiatives, and later served as the 𝗨𝗣 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘆𝗮𝘀 𝗗𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗗𝗚 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗿 during the 𝙁𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙥𝙞𝙣𝙤 𝙁𝙤𝙤𝙙 𝙈𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙝 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲: Ilonggo Youth Day and SDG Action Commitment Day.

Through journalism, student leadership, community engagement, and sustainability advocacy, he has consistently demonstrated leadership rooted in service and driven by impact.

For his exemplary leadership, unwavering commitment to service, and meaningful contributions to both the University and society, this year's 𝐒𝐎𝐓𝐄𝐂𝐇 𝐃𝐞𝐚𝐧'𝐬 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝 is conferred upon 𝐋𝐨𝐮𝐢𝐞𝐥 𝐉𝐚𝐲 𝐀. 🏅 𝐒𝐎𝐓𝐄𝐂𝐇 𝐀𝐜𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐄𝐱𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐞𝐬 🏅

The University of the Philippines Visayas School of Technology proudly announces the recipients of the 𝐒𝐎𝐓𝐄𝐂𝐇 𝐀𝐜𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐄𝐱𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝 during this year's 𝐒𝐎𝐓𝐄𝐂𝐇 𝐏𝐀𝐆𝐃𝐀𝐘𝐀𝐖.

Leading this year's graduating class is 𝐉𝐨𝐡𝐧𝐚𝐱𝐱𝐞𝐥 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐤 𝐓. 𝐁𝐨𝐧𝐣𝐨𝐜, who emerged as the 𝗧𝗼𝗽 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗱𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 of the School with an impressive Weighted Average Grade (WAG) of 1.3257, earning the distinction of 𝙢𝙖𝙜𝙣𝙖 𝙘𝙪𝙢 𝙡𝙖𝙪𝙙𝙚 in the BS Chemical Engineering program. A proud son of Minglanilla, Cebu, he packed his bags and journeyed to Miagao, Iloilo, embracing challenges, pursuing excellence, and ultimately bringing pride and honor to his family.

Meanwhile, the BS Food Technology graduating class is led by 𝐉𝐚𝐧𝐫𝐢 𝐌. 𝐋𝐥𝐚𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐨, who attained the highest WAG in the program with 1.5331, earning the distinction of 𝙘𝙪𝙢 𝙡𝙖𝙪𝙙𝙚. Hailing from Banga, South Cotabato, he traveled all the way from Mindanao to pursue his dreams and has since become one of SOTECH's finest and most inspiring graduates.

For their exemplary academic achievements and unwavering dedication to excellence, Bonjoc and Llamoso are this year's recipients of the 𝐒𝐎𝐓𝐄𝐂𝐇 𝐀𝐜𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐄𝐱𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝.
