The Division of Physical Sciences and Mathematics (DPSM) proudly congratulates Dr. Francis Dimzon on his appointment as Director of the University of the Philippines Visayas Digital Innovation Center (UPV-DIC).

Dr. Dimzon’s appointment comes alongside his continuing role as Project Development Assistant for Digital Transformation of the University. A dedicated member of DPSM, he has contributed extensively to the University through his service as Systems Administrator of the DPSM Computer Laboratory and as Assistant to the Vice Chancellor for Planning and Development for Data and Information Systems Program. He also served as College Secretary of CAS.

Beyond administrative leadership, Dr. Dimzon has been an active resource person in digital innovation, information technology, and data analytics, supporting various programs of UP Visayas, UP Open University, and institutions across Western Visayas. He continues to inspire students as a faculty member teaching Computer Science and Mathematics courses.

Dr. Dimzon earned his PhD in Computer Science from De La Salle University in 2023. He completed his MS and Diploma in Computer Science at UP Los Baños in 2000 and 1997, respectively, and graduated cm laude with a BS in Applied Mathematics from UP Visayas in 1994.

We celebrate this milestone and wish Dr. Dimzon continued success in advancing digital innovation and excellence in the University and beyond.

Last February 27, 2026, the University of the Philippines - Visayas (UPV) hosted the 4th International Conference on ICT Application Research (IAR2026 Winter), organized by UPV’s Division of Physical Sciences and Mathematics (DPSM) in cooperation with the Japan-based International ICT Application Research Society (IIARS) together with the University of the Philippines Diliman (UPD).

The conference was held in a hybrid format at the Little Theater, UP Visayas, Iloilo City, and brought together researchers from various disciplines to share insights and innovations in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) applications, ranging from science and engineering to the social sciences.

The program commenced with a welcome message from UPV Chancellor Prof. Clement Camposano, followed by introductory remarks from Dr. Taku Jiromaru of Kurume University. The keynote address was delivered by UP Vice President for Research and Innovation Dr. Joel Joseph Marciano, presenting on the current state of development of the Philippines' space capabilities via the development of small-scale satellites for numerous applications addressing various national concerns.

Conference sessions covered diverse topics, including AI chatbots for counseling and academic use, tourism recommendation systems, decision-making modeling, post-quantum cryptography, prompt engineering in generative AI, conversational Japanese simplification, ICT applications in accounting and education, student perception analysis in computing courses, image processing applications, radar sensor simulations, optical microresonators, and ICT expenditure patterns among fisher and farmer households. Poster presentations also featured entries on wave energy-based electricity generation for small island settings, microprocessor-based microplastics tracking, and network analysis applications in Philippine coastal tourism.

The IAR2026 program concluded with closing remarks from Dr. Fidel Nemenzo, followed by a dinner banquet for onsite attendees.

UPCAT 2027 APPLICATIONS ARE NOW OPEN for incoming new first-year students for AY 2027-2028.

Applicants must fill out and submit their Form 1 in the online portal from 03 March to 30 March 2026 to take the exam on 01 and 02 August 2026.

Current Grade 11 students this SY 2025-2026 who will graduate senior high school by SY 2026-2027, or current Grade 12 students who have not taken the UPCAT in the previous cycles are eligible to apply.

School officials must fill out and confirm their students in the Form 2A portal from 03 March to 10 April 2026, for applicants to receive their test permit in July 2026.

Applicants must then revisit the portal after the exam, starting 03 August until 24 August 2026, to fill out their grades for Grades 8, 9, 10, and 11 in the Form 2B portal. They must also submit the hard copy certified true copy of their SF-10 or Student Permanent Record to the UP Office of Admissions located inside UP Diliman, Quezon City.

Application is not on a first-come, first-serve basis. However, please make sure to submit your application online by the deadline.

This award gives recognition to faculty members who demonstrate outstanding performance in the areas of teaching, research or creative work, and/or public service.

The UPV Division of Physical Sciences and Mathematics celebrated its Christmas Party, marked not only by good food but also with hearty laughter. Faculty members and staff gathered together to enjoy the occasion, which was further made special by the presence of invited guests, including Mae Pison, Jennifer Zoluaga, Jacob Tiu, Lourdes Zamora, and Henry Tarrazona. The gathering served as a brief but welcome break from the usual pace of academic work.
