With the recent shooting incident in Zamboanga City, we once again remind our friends in the media to be mindful of the reporting.

The media plays an important role in delivering news during mass shootings. Here are some guidelines for the ethical and responsible coverage of mass shootings.

- Be mindful of your words. Avoid using terms like “successful” or “failed,” like there is something to be gained or lost when carrying out the attack.

- Avoid reporting very specific details. There is a risk of copycat mass shootings. Reporting very specific details of the event may reinforce these copycat behaviors. Sensationalized imagery or messaging may also cause further distress.

- Focus on the survivors and not on the shooter. Do not glamorize the act by naming the shooter. Provide space for survivors to tell their stories at their own pace.

- Do not show raw images or videos of the shooting. This may cause unnecessary distress to the general public, and may exacerbate distress of those affected and their families. Obtain informed consent before filming survivors/victims and their families.

- Consider your presence in the affected community. Be sensitive as to how your presence in the community/school may make the community feel. Avoid intrusive questioning. Respect the grief and mourning of affected individuals and families.

- Avoid reporting on the shooter’s psychological state or mental health, or on their motives. Wait for a thorough investigation before reporting these conclusions, as this may have a negative effect on other people with mental health concerns, or may motivate copycat shooters.

Furthermore, make sure you report clearly and calmly so as not to cause unnecessary anxiety and confusion.

Provide resources for those who might be in need of professional help. Include information on crisis hotlines, counseling services, and community support.

Happening now: Philippine Children Research Network (PCRN) holds its first general membership meeting via Zoom. In the meeting is Asst. Prof. Aguston Huyong, one of PCRN's founding members, who encouraged researchers and practitioners to join PCRN. PCRN is a multidisciplinary community of researchers committed to advancing the conduct and application of research on policies and programs designed to champion the rights of children in the Philippines. Also in the meeting are Asst. Prof. Janelle Rose Tan, Assoc Prof. Bernice Vania Mamauag, and Ms Khent Adenix.

From August 6–8, psychology educators, researchers, practitioners, students, and advocates from across the Philippines, Asia, and beyond came together to exchange ideas, challenge dominant ways of knowing, learn from one another, and imagine a psychology education that is more culturally grounded, inclusive, and responsive to the communities we serve.

To our speakers, presenters, facilitators, and participants: Thank you for sharing your knowledge, experiences, questions, and perspectives with us. You made these three days a truly meaningful space for dialogue and learning.

CAS faculty members train Negros Occ. prov’l gov’t employees on psych first aid

Faculty members from the College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas conducted two batches of psychological first aid training organized by the Negros Occidental Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) last August 3 to 4 and 5 to 6, 2026 in Bacolod City.

Prof. Dr. Johnrev Guilaran of the Division of Social Sciences led the training team composed of Asst. Prof. Janelle Rose Tan and Ms Jezzebelle Baldo-Villanueva of the Division of Social Sciences, and Asst. Prof. Helen Grace Concepcion Fernandez of the Division of Professional Education.

Key personnel from the Negros Occ. PDRRMO, Province of Neg. Occ. Human Resource Development Office, Provincial Health Office, Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office, and disaster response personnel from various cities and municipalities in the province of Negros Occ. participated in the training.

Ms Irene Bel Ploteña, head of the Negros Occ. PDRRMO, said the training aimed to address the need for disaster responders in the Province to be equipped with the knowledge and skills in providing psychological relief to survivors in the immediate aftermath of disasters and other emergencies, and the need for responders to also support each other during and after disasters response.

The PFA training is part of the Negros Occ. Provincial Government’s efforts to improve disaster response in the Province, to also include addressing the mental health and psychosocial wellbeing of survivors and of disaster responders.

Now: Day 2 of PFA Training for personnel of Negros Occidental Provincial Government. Participants from the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office, Provincial Health Office, and Provincial Human Resource Management Office presented their plans to integrate Psychological First Aid in their respective offices.
