๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐: Livelihood Program for Preservation of Marine Resources
Last May 9, 2026, first year students of the UP Visayas NSTP-CWTS College of Management conducted a community livelihood program at the Baybay Norte Covered Court, Miagao.
The activity aimed to help the fishersโ wives and mothers of Brgy. Baybay Norte learn alternative livelihood opportunities through milkfish deboning. It also promoted proper use of fish resources, waste reduction, and sustainable income opportunities for the community.
The program featured lectures on milkfish deboning, sanitation, and good manufacturing practices in fish and food processing by Ms. Mercy B. Quilantang, as well as a discussion on milkfish deboning as a source of income by Ms. Mary Ann G. Serrano. Participants also joined a hands-on demonstration and practical activity facilitated by Ms. Rosana G. Alama.
This activity was made possible through the support of IFPT-CFOS, Baybay Norte Barangay Officials, Rural Bank of Miagao (Iloilo), Inc., and the Daughters of Mary Immaculate International (DMII) Miagao Circle.
Together, we continue to create opportunities for communities through learning, livelihood, and service.

The Master of Science in Post-harvest Fisheries (MS PhF) students participated in the Genetic Modification (GM) Risk Assessment Workshop for Fisheries and Aquaculture Systems held from May 6 to 7, 2026 at the BFAR Training Hall, CLSU Compound, Science City of Muรฑoz, Nueva Ecija. This activity was organized by the DABIOTECH -funded Fish CRISPR Project to equip researchers and stakeholders with knowledge for the safe implementation of gene editing technologies. The workshop featured lectures from leading experts in the field of gene editing and biotechnology. Among the invited speakers were Dr. Eric M. Hallerman who discussed risk assessment for genome-edited fishes and Dr. Rex A. Dunham who delivered lectures on the application of CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing technology in catfish and other fishes and GM risk assessment practices. Ms. Ma. Lorelie Agbagala also presented the status of the biosafety policies in the Philippines. The students actively engaged with the speakers during the open forum sessions, allowing them to deepen their understanding of the current advances and challenges in biotechnology and biosafety.
The students also visited several research institutions including the Philippine Carabao Center (PCC), DA Crop Biotechnology Center at the Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice), Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources National Freshwater Technology Center (BFAR NFTC), and Fisheries Biotechnology Center (FBC) including the CRISPR Laboratory from May 6 to 9, 2026.
At PCC, the students visited the National Water Buffalo Gene Pool, which houses elite riverine breeds of buffaloes intended for milk production. They also toured the National Livestock Cryobank Facility, a repository of germplasm from livestock species across the country, that supports the livestock biotechnology innovations and cryopreservation capacities. The students likewise visited the Animal Nutrition Laboratory, which develops feed and probiotic products, provides analytical services for feed evaluation and molecular analysis, and supports research on seaweed utilization in animal nutrition. In addition, they observed the various packaging materials used for carabao milk and related delicacies.
During their visit to PhilRice, the students were introduced to different rice varieties conserved in the gene bank, including the Golden rice, a genetically engineered rice variety enriched with beta-carotene. They learned about the efforts in the conservation and management of rice genetic resources. They also toured the molecular genetics laboratory, where they observed various instruments and facilities used in gene editing and molecular research.
At BFAR-NFTC, they toured several aquaculture facilities, including the tilapia milt cryopreservation facility, the modified intensive tilapia hatchery, hatchery complex including the crayfish hatchery. These visits allowed the students to observe modern aquaculture technologies and breeding systems used to support fisheries production and research.
The students also visited the Fisheries Biotechnology Center and CRISPR laboratory, where they were introduced to equipment used for molecular biology research. Furthermore, Dr. Rhoda Mae Simora, project leader of the Fish CRISPR project, demonstrated the operation of the microinjection set up and micropipette puller, used for CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing research.
This educational trip is part of the subjects Fish 238 (Instrumental Analysis), Fish 247 (Product Development and Packaging), and Fish 244 (Seaweed Processing and Utilization) under Dr. Rhoda Mae Simora, Ms. Audrey Mae Orillaza and Ms. Cindy Armada, providing the students with valuable experiential learning opportunities that complemented their classroom discussions and strengthened their understanding of biotechnology, instrumentation, and product development in the fisheries sector.
